Paducah Power System seeks applications for a Relay Technician. This individual will be responsible for the configuration and testing of PPS protective relays, SCADA equipment, meters, and other intelligent electronic devices and related equipment. This position reports directly to the Manager of Technical Services. The ideal candidate possesses a thorough knowledge of electric power system operations, techniques, materials and equipment required for relay and metering installations;
as well as proficiency with Windows and Linux based operating systems. Education should include electrical engineering technology or the equivalent. Pay is commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications. In addition to seasoned applicants, PPS is open to considering recent graduates with less experience. The Relay Technician must be a self‑starter, willing to accept responsibility, and be capable of working on his/her own initiative;
this position plays an important role in maintaining reliable service to the organization. Non‑standard working hours and overtime are required as needed. - Responsible for both program and non‑engineering technical responsibilities for power projects.
- Responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, and administering of maintenance and/or modifications programs in areas for transmission, distribution, & generation systems.
- Responsible for installation, operation, maintenance, modification, and testing of power and auxiliary equipment including protective relaying and control systems used in substations.
- Coordinates projects under construction as they pertain to relaying and control systems.
- Responsible for organization of interfaces, scheduling and planning of work.
- Coordinates the resolution of technical problems and conflicts.
- Ensures that power and related equipment operate efficiently and reliably.
- Coordinates and determines the sequence of required test(s) on facilities, obtains clarification of intended design, resolves conflicts when existing facility design does not meet intended specifications.
- Responsible for determining if the overall scope of projects, necessary interfaces and if the equipment or system will work.
- Makes field changes to correct design deficiencies.
- Coordinates and/or performs modifications to the system or equipment.
- Oversight responsibility for the checkout of newly installed equipment.
- Critical analysis of schematic and verification of wiring diagrams to ensure proper installation, wiring and circuit intent was accomplished.
- Initiates and documents field changes necessary to ensure the proper operation of equipment and systems.
- Coordinates and directs/performs acceptance, initial, and maintenance checks and tests of power and related control and auxiliary equipment, and related systems at construction projects, substations, and peaking plant. Equipment and systems include, but are not limited to protective relaying control schemes and other relaying systems used in the protection of a power system; transformers and regulators of power substations within the power system;
and power circuit breakers and the associated control schemes of voltage systems from 120 volts to 161,000 volts. - Assesses the need for and recommend the purchase of power test equipment.
- Field test equipment after repairs are completed for serviceability.
- Performs repair on all types of instrumentation.
- Observes all safety rules/regulations including the wearing of prescribed safety equipment.
- Performs analytical assessment of systems for in‑service failures and follow through on this assessment to restore the equipment to the required operating specifications. System assessment requires ability to understand and interpret manufacturers’ manuals and develop necessary methods to test and isolate the malfunction and make appropriate repairs to include not only replacing major components, but also locating and replacing or repairing faulty parts down to specific component level in circuitry.
