Overview

The Community Nursery Nurse works as an integrated member of the team to provide up to date, high quality services, support and interventions to families and carers with children aged 0 - 19 years. You will empower families enabling them to make decisions that affect their family's future health and wellbeing within Torbay. The Community Nursery Nurse will be responsible to carry out duties delegated by the SCPHN Health Visitors (HV) and School Nurses (SN).

This post is for 22.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

The Community Nursery Nurse will be responsible to carry out duties delegated by the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). The post requires an experienced NNEB or equivalent qualification and experience of working in a community environment.

  • The CNN will organise and support planned interventions in health and community settings e.g. child health clinics, open access/drop in sessions: health demonstrations and presentations, parenting groups and other support groups e.g. Breast feeding support groups, NCMP in schools, parents-to-be groups.
  • The CNN must have the ability to plan and organise their own diary with regards to their wider team duties
  • Excellent record keeping skills, with legible handwriting, word processing and typing skills are essential
  • The CNN must be able to recognise situations where service users require advice and help from the SCPHN
  • Must have knowledge of infant feeding and nutrition and the ability to provide guidance and support on weaning and a healthy family diet
  • Undertake and assist in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, under the direction of the SCPHN Health Visitor.
  • Able to recognise when situations need to be referred to the SCPHN e.g. developmental delay, child protection.
  • Support families through episodes of care where there are children with special needs or life limiting illnesses, or child protection, Early Help Framework or Child in Need circumstances under the supervision of a SCPHN.

Job responsibilities
  • The post holder will collaborate with the wider team in offering public health services and family support in the community. This will include undertaking developmental assessments and providing support within health clinics, children's centres and homes.
  • To be able to develop working relationships with service users and their families; carers; health professionals; voluntary sector organisations, in individual and group settings.
  • To be able to communicate effectively with people who may themselves have communication difficulties, including willingness to seek out and use resources to help those whose first language is not English or those with sensory or learning difficulties.
  • To be able to answer telephone calls, taking comprehensive messages and notifying colleagues, dealing with post, e-mails, answering queries, etc. Undertaking all communication in a way that is appropriate to the communication needs of the user
  • On occasions, be prepared to accompany members of the Torbay 0 to 19 team on home visits, where lone-working is not appropriate.
  • Regularly update the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) team and Torbay 0 to 19 colleagues of any changes to a families requirements or needs.
Person Specification Qualifications and training
  • NVQ level 3 in Early Years or Childcare or equivalent. (BTEC, NNEB, CACHE Diploma).
  • Other level 3 relevant qualifications may be considered, depending on level of experience.
  • knowledge of developmental trauma and attachment theory and the impact of this on children & families
  • IT training.
  • Health promotion training

  • Experience of working with complex family needs
