This senior clinical post sits within a mature and dynamic Stroke Psychology service. Psychology posts are integrated as part of clinical multidisciplinary sub-teams across NHSGGC stroke inpatient wards consisting of clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and nursing / medical consultants. In addition, psychology provides a clinical outpatient service to patients post hospital discharge supporting longer term adjustment to ill health, community reintegration and return to work.

In addition, as a senior clinician within the team, the post holder will support the leadership capacity of the Consultant psychologist within the service. They will provide supervision to 8a staff and take delegated leadership of health board-wide quality improvement projects in line with National Clinical Guidelines, the Progressive Stroke Pathway, and the National Stroke Improvement Plan.

The stroke psychology team provides a clinical service offering highly specialist psychological assessment, including neuropsychological assessments, and therapy at the same time as offering advice and consultation on clients’ psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers. The post holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures, whilst being part of the stroke psychology team and receiving supervision from a consultant clinical psychologist.

The post holder will be primarily based at Royal Alexandra Hospital and will deliver a clinical service across the Stroke inpatient ward, the Clyde Community Stroke Team and medical outpatients. However, the stroke psychology service provides an area wide service to NHSGGC and as such the post holder will be required to provide psychology input across the service area and at different bases as required.

The Stroke Psychology service aims to offer a variety of modes of patient contact including remote, face to face and home visit appointments. The stroke psychology team utilise a range of therapies, including cognitive behavioural (CBT), compassion (CFT) and acceptance (ACT) focussed approaches. Motivational interviewing approaches are also at the core of our clinical work, complimentary to the care received from the wider MDT.

The psychology team are actively supported to seek therapy training, where indicated, and to engage with additional therapy specific supervision and special interest groups. This post offers great variety, including individual and group work opportunities.

The post holder will utilise their research skills for audit, policy and service development, and research activities within the area served by the team/service, in particular to support the development and implementation of the change agenda outlined in national driver documents. Additionally, to provide clinical and professional supervision to trainees undertaking Masters/Doctoral training, as well as supporting the development and delivery of MDT training and follow-up coaching/supervision sessions, where required.
