Salary from £66,000 with up to 20% Annual Bonus, Family Healthcare and Car Allowance Permanent / Hybrid (3 days office / 2 days remote) Closing Date: 11th September 2026

Purpose

The Environmental Manager is accountable for leading environmental management across SP Transmission’s (SPT) Core, Strategic and HVDC portfolios, ensuring environmental requirements, risks and obligations are translated into clear controls and consistent delivery across the full project lifecycle. You will be responsible for translating any new or evolving Environmental or legal requirements into practical plans and standards that can be embedded into business as usual.

Reporting to the Head of Quality, Environmental and IMS, you will lead environmental capability through Lead Environmental Advisors and wider specialist teams, sets portfolio priorities, allocating internal and external resource, providing management oversight of environmental performance, compliance, assurance and escalation. You will play a key part in translating functional direction into practical delivery arrangements that support RIIO-T3 objectives, major capital investment and wider business commitments.

Responsibilities

As Environmental Manager, you will lead the Environmental Management function across SPT’s Core, Strategic and HVDC portfolios, translating strategic direction from the Head of Quality, Environmental and IMS into clear priorities, controls and delivery expectations for portfolio and project teams. Through the leadership of Lead Environmental Advisors and a wider team of Environmental Specialists, you will drive performance, capability development and workload planning, ensuring the appropriate environmental support is in place across a complex and expanding project portfolio.

You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the environmental resourcing model across portfolios, making informed decisions on resource deployment, priorities, escalation and intervention to balance programme requirements, business risk and available capability. You will provide leadership, challenge and support on significant or recurring environmental matters, determining where issues require escalation, additional controls or changes to delivery approaches. A key aspect of the role will be promoting a consistent Environmental management culture across internal teams and delivery partners, embedding clear expectations, governance standards and accountability for compliance and best practice.

Working closely with Regulators, statutory bodies, local authorities and other key stakeholders, you will lead and coordinate engagement on material Environmental matters, ensuring obligations, expectations and risks are understood and effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle. You will oversee environmental issues arising from stakeholder engagement, determining appropriate business responses and ensuring commitments, consent conditions and agreed actions are translated into project requirements and operational controls.

The role also includes oversight of framework-approved specialist Environmental Consultants and Contractors, ensuring surveys, assessments and advisory services are delivered safely, compliantly, to the required quality standards and in line with programme requirements. In addition, you will contribute to relevant legislative, regulatory and industry consultations where these impact SPT’s environmental obligations, risk profile or future delivery requirements.

You will provide strong Environmental leadership across portfolio, Engineering, Construction, Procurement and senior leadership teams, influencing decisions and embedding Environmental expectations into Governance, Planning, Design, Procurement and project delivery activities. By driving behavioural change and accountability across portfolios, you will ensure Environmental considerations remain integral to delivery.
