The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Theatre Perioperative Practitioner within the Day Surgery Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH). The unit comprises two operating theatres, a 10-bed recovery area and a same-day admission ward. The service provides perioperative care for patients undergoing elective surgery across a range of specialties including general surgery, gynaecology, urology, breast surgery, dental and oral surgery, and cardiology.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will work as part of the nursing and multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, person-centred perioperative care to patients undergoing elective surgical procedures. Responsibilities include assessing patient needs, planning, implementing and evaluating evidence-based care, maintaining accurate patient records, and ensuring care is delivered in line with NMC/HCPC standards, NHS policies and relevant legislation. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining a safe clinical environment, support patients and families throughout their care journey, supervise and mentor registered and non-registered staff, participate in clinical education and appraisal processes, and support audit, research and service improvement activities.

They will also assist with the day-to-day management of resources, equipment, supplies and staffing while providing leadership within the clinical team when required.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
  • First or Second Level Registered Nurse or HCPC Registered Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).
  • Current NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Interest in working within a perioperative/day surgery environment.
  • Previous perioperative or day surgery experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Ability to provide high-quality, person-centred care.
  • Understanding of professional, legal and ethical healthcare standards.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to supervise and support junior staff and learners.
  • Competent in the use of electronic patient records and information technology.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Access to comprehensive in-house training and mentorship programmes.
