Head of Counselors – Summer Leadership Staff

Join Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas as a Head of Counselors for the equestrian Camp Bette Perot summer leadership season (end of May–end of July 2026). You will lead and mentor a team of counselors to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching experience for girls ages 7‑16.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) connects more than 150 campers each week in a diverse community. Camp Bette Perot is a 20‑minute drive from Palestine, Texas, and about 2 hours from Dallas, offering a 13‑hour/day schedule for 6 days a week.

Job Summary

Assists the Camp Director and staff with daily camp operations, program coordination, staff coaching, mentorship, values promotion, and problem‑solving. Reports to the Camp Director.

Specific Roles Available
  • Head of Counselors (21+):
    Support counselor belonging, development, effectiveness, wellbeing, and growth through training, meetings, mentorship, observation, feedback, and encouragement. Oversee counselors to ensure campers have a safe, fun, and enriching experience. Assist with conflict mediation and collaborate with Head of Program and Head of Campers on daily camp life.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Champion a positive, inclusive, caring, safe, and fun camp environment and promote the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Lead and participate in camp program activities and administration: meals, activities, rest, free time, chores, staff trainings, meetings, planning, and cleanup.
  • Assist with staff training and mentoring and work closely with camp administrative staff.
  • Assist with response coordination for emergencies.
  • Assist with camper care to keep campers physically, socially, and emotionally safe.
  • Assist with weekend operational support, including cultural events for international staff.
  • Facilitate positive group relationships and address conflict constructively.
  • Advocate for camper and staff confidence, responsibility, challenge seeking, teamwork, learning, goal setting, relationship skills, coping strategies, and opportunities for personal and group success.
  • Adhere to camp schedule and uphold schedules with others.
  • Assist in care of campsite facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Practice all camp safety standards and emergency procedures.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to meet camp program and operation needs.
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as requested.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • College degree, or within one year of completing degree or equivalent experience.
  • Organized, participant‑focused, and safety conscious.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti‑racism.
  • Excited about working with youth and young adults of all ages and variable needs.
  • At least two summers of experience as a camp counselor or similar participant‑focused role in a youth camp setting, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to address staff and camper conflicts, concerns, and questions equitably and developmentally appropriately.
  • Willingness to live and work in a camp setting with wildlife exposure and outdoor conditions.
  • Willingness to be active outdoors all day in variable weather conditions.
  • Willingness to role‑model respect, positivity, smiling, cheerfulness, kindness, patience, honesty, inclusion, good mental hygiene, accountability, and self‑regulation.
  • Willingness to listen, learn, and cooperate with others.
  • Willingness to embrace simple living while staying on camp.
  • Ability to work long hours all day and all week, including potential overnight response (staff have personal break time each day).
  • Ability to complete the full term (all weeks) of camp agreement.
  • Demonstrate and promote courtesy, respect, and professionalism to coworkers, volunteers, and others.
  • Upon employment, employee must register as an adult member in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
