Domestic Violence Child Welfare Advocate
The Domestic Violence Child Welfare Advocate is co‑located in the child welfare offices and works from an empowerment‑based philosophy, skilled at identifying strengths. The advocate provides consultation to child protection staff, referral services to survivors, and attends monthly meetings between all partnering stakeholders to develop strategies to resolve any barriers or issues. They facilitate training to child welfare staff and community partners, provide one‑on‑one empowerment‑based domestic‑violence education classes, and facilitate weekly support groups for survivors of domestic violence incorporating self‑care, safety planning, dynamics and tactics of abuse, healthy vs.
unhealthy relationships and the effects on children.
- Serves as the expert on child welfare–involved domestic violence cases and helps build the capacity of child welfare professionals to partner with survivors and hold batterers accountable.
- Provides crisis de‑escalation, safety planning, counseling, social service referrals, domestic violence empowerment‑based classes, and advocacy as well as registration services to survivors of domestic violence at the Department of Children and Families, a Community Based Care Provider, other partner sites and at Serene Harbor main campus.
- Provides consultation to Department of Children and Families staff and partner agency staff on domestic violence cases and hosts training centered on the dynamics of domestic violence, batterer accountability and safety planning.
- Provides assistance to survivors who are involved in court proceedings: e.g., orientation to procedures, emotional support, and attends court hearings.
- Reviews confidential victim referrals submitted by CPI for the purpose of providing and/or coordinating case consultation services, assisting in the plan to link the participant to crisis intervention, emotional support, short‑term counseling, financial assistance, shelter, or other related assistance as indicated.
- Participates in all training sessions and quarterly conference calls facilitated by FCADV that are related to the CPI project.
- Attends community service provider meetings as required.
- Reports directly to the Program Director.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Shelter Program Director or President & CEO.
- Works full time 40 hours per week, with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Regularly travels to workplace locations:
Department of Children and Families, Brevard County Courthouses, law enforcement agencies, and other locations.
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in a social service field held with personal or work experience in domestic violence.
- Valid Florida driver’s license, safe driving record, proof of automobile liability insurance.
- Excellent interpersonal and community‑building skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Experience & knowledge of social justice issues, particularly gender violence, immigration, and racial, class, and/or sexual orientation issues.
- Must be able to attend a three‑day Domestic Violence Core Competency Training.
- Bilingual strongly preferred.
