ResponsibilitiesThe Optical Technician is responsible for collecting and recording ocular and systemic patient histories, visual acuities, blood pressure, intraocular pressure, auto refractions, manifest refractions, performing external examinations, dry‑eye testing, and disease‑specific extra testing.
- Collecting and recording patient medical history
- Instructing patients on post‑operative care, medication use, contact lens care, and exam expectations
- Performing visual acuity testing, auto and manifest refractions, and tonometry (measuring eye pressure)
- Measuring pupil size and reactivity
- Performing confrontational visual field testing and pachymetry (corneal thickness measurement)
- Performing dry eye testing
- Participating in light cleaning of the facility
- Maintaining a sanitized environment
- Performing corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurements, retinal thickness and topography, fluorescein angiography, and B‑scan ultrasonography
- Assisting with contact lens fitting and instructing patients on insertion and removal
- Preparing for and assisting with in‑office procedures, including consenting patients
- Facilitating digital optometric appointments (training provided)
- Saturday hours are generally 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Travel between locations may be required for training or business needs; employees are reimbursed at the standard IRS mileage rate.
- Minimum of one year assisting in an optical practice or as an optometrist assistant
- Ophthalmic experience is a plus
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to effectively multi‑task
- Attentive to detail and accuracy
$17–$24 per hour plus bonus, commensurate with experience.
