Overview
THIS IS A CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT AND EXAMINATION PROCESS. IT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME, WITH LITTLE OR NO NOTICE.
To perform a variety of duties and responsibilities involved in assisting in instruction of English as a second language to students in a school setting; and to administer language assessment examinations to students.
Supervision Received and ExercisedReceives general supervision from certificated staff.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in English language acquisition progress of students having home languages other than English; assist individual and small groups of students in listening, reading, writing, and speaking English; monitor and assist students through drill, study, and research activities.
- Assist in the preparation and reinforcement of the presentation of bilingual learning materials and in the performance of other bilingual instructional assistant activities.
- Assist in the administration of assessment and placement test; administer both the oral and written portions of the exam testing reading, writing, and language structure; oversee students being tested; score tests and prepare student diagnostic sheets.
- Assist teacher in monitoring student progress; identify students who are ready to be reclassified; retest as necessary; recommend reclassification in accordance with established guidelines.
- Perform record keeping activities; take attendance and maintain attendance records; fill out forms and applications as needed; assist in maintaining testing and other records; record and update student data.
- Assist in preparing teaching materials and learning activities, as directed; collect, assemble, and distribute textbooks, learning package materials, supplies, equipment, and resource materials; order instructional material and aids when necessary.
- Telephone and interpret for non-English speaking parents, when directed, to inform them of the behavioral or academic standing of their child; interpret at parent/teacher conferences.
- Provide oral interpretations of assignments and teacher instructions/lessons to non-English speaking students.
- Assist in maintaining a neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment, such as preparing bulletin board materials and decorate classroom.
- Attend and participate in faculty, staff, inservice, and parent conferences and meetings.
- Operate audio-visual equipment, computer, copying machines and other related equipment that serve as aids in or to the instructional program.
- Assist non-English speaking students in English language and American culture.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience:
Two years of instructional assistant experience.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of 24 units of college-level coursework designed to develop skills in bilingual education instructional assistant work.
Academic Proficiency:
Applicants must meet one of the following to satisfy the academic proficiency requirement:
- Completed two years or more of college units (48+ units); OR
- Received an AA degree or higher; OR
- Successfully complete the district's academic proficiency assessment which requires knowledge of reading, writing and mathematics.
Official college transcripts must be attached to the application to validate the degree or completion of 48+ college units. If official transcripts are not attached, the applicant will be required to take and pass the academic proficiency assessment in addition to the job-specific examination.
Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Special RequirementsBilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

ExaminationThe examination components consist of a qualifying written multiple-choice and oral exam. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to take the exam and are notified via email of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance. After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies.
When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated on this bulletin.
Work year:
This position observes a 182-day work calendar, and typically works part-time at five hours and forty-five minutes (5.75) per day.
