Wildlife Biologist 2/3 – Palmer, Alaska What you will be doing:
In this flexibly staffed Wildlife Biologist 2/3 position, the incumbent will collaborate with the Region IV research team of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to evaluate critical management and ecological questions in large carnivores, with a focus on brown bears andassapput wolves. Responsibilities include developing research questions and hypotheses, designing and executing rigorous studies, analyzing data, presenting findings at professional meetings, writing interim reports and final publications, and communicating results to managers, the Board of Game, the kolat public, and other audiences.

The working conditions you can expectThe incumbent will conduct field work澡in remote parts of southcentral and southwestern Alaska, sometimes requiring small fixed‑wing aircraft, helicopter darting, small boats, ATVs, or snow machines. Some fieldwork may involve extended stays in remote field camps. Incumbents will be exposed to biting insects, snow, wind, rain, continuous sun, and other hazardous conditions during fieldwork.
Incumbents must be certified to carry firearms and bear spray during *((fieldwork. The incumbent will have a private office in Palmer for office work.
- Requires frequent travel for fieldwork (at least 10 days at a time at least twice a year).
Candidate should possess the skills listed below.
- Experience developing and executing.lv research projects from conception to publication.
- Experience analyzing animal location and movement data such as home ranges, habitat use, migration, and range fidelity.
- Experience with population abundance and demographic data, including aerial surveys, mark‑recapture, sightability, and integrated population models.
- Experience handling large, complex datasets in R or other statistical software.
- Experience managing logistics for remote fieldwork.

A valid driver’s license is required. Training & Certifications (if not already certified)
- Animal Welfare Training
- Wildlife Capture and Chemical Immobilization Certification
- Shotgun and firearm certification
- State of Alaska Wildlife Collecting permit
- CPR/First Aid (recommended)
- ADF&G Law Enforcement limited peace officer commission
- Authority to legally carry and handle firearms
- Recommended certification as Certified/Associate Wildlife Biologist by The Wildlife Society or equivalent.
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a related field, or a recognized substitution of credit hours.
- One year of professional‑level biologist experience (e.g., Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist
1).
