The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Palmer!

What you will be doing

This position is responsible for working as part of the Division of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) team in the Regional Information Center in Palmer assisting stakeholders with questions on hunting and trapping regulations and opportunities, hunter education, and wildlife viewing in the region and statewide. This position issues licenses, permits, and harvest tickets and collects information from the public on those activities and assists on regional field projects to support management and research biologists.

The working environment you can expect

This position, based in Palmer at the Regional Information Center, regularly interacts with members of the public issuing licenses, permits, and collecting harvest and field information from the public’s hunting, trapping, and subsistence activities. Daily work environment includes interacting with stakeholders in‑person and on the phone in a busy office environment, issuing wildlife products, and recording reports of hunting and trapping activities to support field investigations and wildlife surveys.

Due to the collaborative approach between the Divisions of Wildlife Conservation and Sport Fish in staffing the Palmer Regional Information Center, the incumbent will also gain comparable experience with the Division of Sportfish.

  • Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low‑level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals
Who we are looking for
  • Experience working as part of a team and/or in a busy office environment.
  • Experience communicating with stakeholders, in‑person and over the phone (i.e., explaining trapping/hunting regulations, processes for obtaining a hunting permit, public access, viewing opportunities, etc.).
  • Excellent organizational skill with high attention to detail necessary for collecting and recording accurate biological information, hunt reports, reports, data, and biological samples.
  • Experience providing logistical support on field projects, working with wildlife, including assisting in surveys.
  • Experience flying in small aircraft completing low‑level flights.
Requirements

High school graduation or the equivalent.

  • AND Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
  • OR One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions: An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
