Archaeology Center – Academic Curator, Academic Program Professional (APP
2) Position – Hybrid

Stanford University School of Humanities and Sciences – Full‑time, Hybrid (one day per week onsite). 100% FTE, continuing exempt position.

Position Summary:

The Archaeology Academic Curator reports to the Director of the Stanford Archaeology Center and collaborates with the SUAC Curator of Collections, the Archaeology Center Administrative Director, and SAC staff to advance and develop the Stanford University Archaeology Collections (SUAC) operations, education, research, and outreach. The Curator supervises student interns, teaching and research assistants, and engages students and faculty across disciplines and the broader public.

Core

Duties
  • Develop and manage research programs, conduct outreach, assign resources, and recommend program improvements.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement opportunities for new research.
  • Source, collect, and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; evaluate alternative solutions to achieve program goals.
  • Teach and assist in teaching and administration of courses; develop curriculum and curriculum‑rating surveys.
  • Write and edit complex content for proposals, research grants, publications, and other program activities.
  • Contribute to strategic program planning and funding and financial sustainability.
  • Advise students and mentor clients.
  • Develop or contribute to outreach strategy.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of relevant experience (advanced degree preferred). PhD preferred for some programs.
  • Professional experience in a museum setting, preferably 5–10 years in Museum Anthropology.
  • Teaching and curriculum development experience.
  • Demonstrated museum experience; subject expertise in anthropology, archaeology, indigenous studies, or related fields.
  • Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong sense of initiative, integrity, and customer‑service mindset.
  • Ability to manage time, multitask, and liaise with faculty and students.
Knowledge,

  • Develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Basic budgeting and financial planning knowledge.
Desired Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Fluency in area of specialization; ability to develop independent publications.
  • Experience managing teaching/research assistants and student interns.
  • Teaching archaeology museum/exhibition courses and guiding student projects.
  • Research on SUAC collections and collections‑based pedagogy.
  • Lead curation of SUAC exhibits.
  • Knowledge of NAGPRA and related statutes; ensure legal compliance.
  • Experience with museum safety, security, and archival data management.
  • Ability to develop strategic planning for SUAC; collaborate with SAC Director.
  • Creativity, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing/walking, sitting, fine manipulation, computer tasks.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying of objects up to 40 lb; rarely >40 lb.
  • Ability to use voice for communication.
  • On‑campus mobility.

Working Conditions

  • May travel locally and occasional overnight travel.
