Assistant Professor of History Stanford

The Department of History at Stanford University is seeking a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in the area of modern history of South Asia with an emphasis on India in the 19th and 20th centuries. The successful candidate will contribute to research and scholarly activities and will be expected to teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, with a demonstrated commitment to mentoring.
The ideal candidate will have an internationally recognized record of scholarship and research on topics related to colonial state formation, social and economic history, global history, labor, policing, protest, historiography, pedagogy, decolonization, and post‑colonial processes in modern India. They will have extensive teaching and advising experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels in the U.S. and global academic settings, and will work with at least two to three research languages of the Indian subcontinent.
We particularly encourage applicants who can bring their work into a wide conversation among South Asian specialists and non‑specialists across the university.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in History conferred and in hand by the appointment start date. Applicants must submit the following materials for full consideration:

The salary range for this position is $108,000 – $127,000 for the academic year. The university has provided a pay range representing its good‑faith estimate of what it reasonably expects to pay. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
