Located in Palo Alto, this dynamic, high‑growth venture capital fund is seeking a Controller. With $2 billion under management and over 100 investments, this firm is poised to bring on a 4th fund and is seeking a strong Controller to manage all finance, accounting, tax, compliance, and scaling the back‑office for growth.
DescriptionThe Controller will report to the CFO and play a key role in managing the accounting and finance function for the funds, management company, and GP entities. This VC fund has outsourced its accounting and limited partner reporting function. The Controller will have primary oversight of these relationships and their work. This is an opportunity to be part of a small, close‑knit finance team where you will get exposure to all aspects of the finance and accounting operations of a venture capital firm, play a part in building the Firm’s back‑office function and systems, and have the chance for personal and long‑term career growth.
Responsibilities- Management of third‑party fund administrator
- Oversight of quarterly and annual fund financials and capital account statements by third‑party administrators for all entities.
- Ownership of quarterly valuation process working with CFO and Finance Consultant
- Oversight of cash management including monitoring and projection of cash needs and determining timing of limited partner capital calls, management of fund capital call lines
- Oversight of all partnership allocations from fund level to GP entity level
- Respond to requests from limited partners regarding accounting and tax issues as needed
- Manage the annual audit and the tax preparation processes
- Portfolio company monitoring and data collection
- Responsible for management company expense review and approvals and process improvement
- Assist with budgeting process
- Assist CFO with researching fund structures, tax issues, and SEC requirements
- Special projects as needed including preparation of reporting for fundraising and annual meetings
- Assist CFO with automation and process improvement
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required
- Public accounting experience is a plus
- CPA is a plus, but not required
- 10 or more years of relevant experience in finance/accounting, including direct experience in alternative investments – ideally venture capital
- Experience in managing outsourced resources in fund administration, audit, tax, and banking
- Familiarity with accounting and fund management software and experience driving change through process improvement
- Excellent financial reporting, analytical and problem‑solving skills. Experience preparing and reviewing GAAP financial statements for investment partnerships.
- Experience with portfolio company valuations for fund financial statements
- High level of knowledge or partnership/fund audit and tax issues and partnership allocations
- Advanced Excel skill is required, power point skills a plus
- Management company experience in VC is a plus
- Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable interacting with and assisting everyone in the firm and – able to communicate clearly, concisely, and confidently across the organization
- Self‑starter able to work independently and with ambiguity
- Able to work with highly confidential materials with a high level of discretion
- Strong work ethic, great attitude, extreme attention to detail, ability to multi‑task
- Ability to work long and irregular hours if needed and have flexibility with schedule
- Desire and ability to make a long‑term commitment
