Additional requirements:

• Serves as the DEXA preceptor to other technologists.

• Provides weekend DEXA coverage as necessary.

• Manages DEXA-related research initiatives.

• Five (5) years of Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) experience.

A Brief Overview

Under medical supervision, performs all Nuclear Medicine procedures on patients of all ages utilizing various types of imaging equipment. Prepares diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals for administration following current radiation safety guidelines and assist in the administration of therapeutic doses. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist follows State and Federal guidelines for the safe use, receipt, and disposal of radioactive materials used in Nuclear Medicine.

This position schedules studies in RIS & EPIC computer system using good judgment in prioritizing scheduling, and works with physicians in Nuclear Medicine to provide a safe and effective operation. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist may be responsible for specific areas of instruction in the training of Radiology students, House Staff and Residents in Nuclear Medicine procedures, protocols, equipment and safety issues.

Participates in both clinical and research applications and research study development.

What you will do
  • Assists in instructing the Residents and other technologists.

  • Calibrate and draw up radiopharmaceutical materials for administration to patients.

  • Cleans and organizes the section/unit on own initiative, maintains cleanliness and orderliness in assigned camera room.

  • Evaluates recorded images for technical quality.

  • Formulates radiopharmaceutical materials from pre-prepared kits. Calibrates instruments and review calibration data to detect trends indicating instrument malfunction.

  • Monitors supplies and equipment to make necessary orders and helps develops new programs to comply with State and Federal Agencies.

  • Performs a full range of nuclear medicine prescribed imaging techniques and measurements used in medical diagnosis and evaluation.

  • Performs general work when able and helps schedules, work assignments, and staff technologists with section organization and development.

  • Prepares and maintain records concerning radiopharmaceutical receiving, dispensing, and disposal activities.

  • Processes computerized image data to include function curves and reconstructed SPECT images and accurately transfer images to the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS).

  • Serves as a team leader with staff. Sets goals to move section to be a more effective unit.

  • Works with Lead Tech to have section/unit meet all ALARA (As Low As Reasonably achievable) Goals.

  • Demonstrates complete knowledge of radiation accidents and is capable of responding to a major accident.

  • Requirement met by License/Certification Requirement.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area
  • Knowledge of medical equipment, instruments, and related functionalities
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT techniques, methods, and equipment
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in the operation of radiologic equipment
  • Knowledge of safety principles and procedures related to PET, Nuclear Medicine and CT
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT quality control and quality assurance
  • Knowledge of structural and organic anatomy including cross-sectional anatomy
  • Knowledge of positioning patients for imaging procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles of image processing and reconstruction
  • Ability to perform required sequences of exacting procedures with accuracy and necessary speed
  • Ability to accurately measure extremely small quantities of liquid samples
  • Ability to perform standard diagnostic procedures using radioactive isotopes and to prepare reports
