Social Science Research Assistant

Department/Unit: Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), Stanford University.
Location: Stanford, California.

Position Summary

Professor Oriana Mastro seeks a full‑time research assistant with first‑rate analytical capabilities and outstanding academic credentials. The role involves conducting social science research, drafting reports, supporting teaching and lecture activities, and assisting with a range of administrative and communication needs. The assistant will support an ongoing book project on the China‑Russia military relationship as well as major research initiatives on deterrence, escalation around Taiwan, Chinese overseas interests, and Beijing’s relationship with the developing world.

The position also supports a teaching portfolio on international security and Chinese military strategy.

Core Duties
  • Conduct literature reviews, revise and edit documents, perform fact‑finding and verification.
  • Assist with proposals and reports, competitive grant submissions, and track budget projections.
  • Support teaching and external speaking engagements by preparing presentations, updating lecture materials, and producing related correspondence.
  • Lead research assistants—organize tasks, review work products, and provide feedback.
  • Manage a busy calendar; arrange domestic and international travel; complete reimbursements and payments.
  • Update program webpages, post publications, and coordinate event announcements with Stanford communications offices.
  • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment; interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor.
  • Develop and administer survey instruments, analyze results, audit data accuracy, and ensure compliance with research protocols.
  • Identify, extract, and summarize data; present findings to supervisor.
  • Build and organize data using statistical programs; adapt new methods for research projects; coordinate IRB renewals.
  • Assist in communicating and designing research findings for internal and external audiences (web updates, social media, white papers).
  • Orient and train new staff or students as needed.
Minimum Requirements

Education & Experience: Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science field or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in conducting policy‑relevant academic research (e.g., honors thesis, research assistantship, think‑tank work).
  • Demonstrated interest in international security, Chinese military strategy, and Indo‑Pacific policy issues.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly master new programs.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple research tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational and detail‑oriented work skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication, including editing for accuracy.
  • Ability to update academic and program webpages in coordination with communications staff.
  • Ability to assist with travel coordination, reimbursement processes, and expense tracking following university policies.
  • Experience providing feedback on research tasks to student assistants with tact and clarity.
