Research Fellow, Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (Reg Lab), Stanford Law School

The Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (Reg Lab) at Stanford University is hiring full‑time pre‑doctoral Research to join our research team. This position is a minimum one‑year commitment, with the option of renewal based on performance and funding. It serves as an excellent next step for those considering graduate school, law school, or business school. Recent fellows have been accepted into PhD programs in computer science, economics, and political science, as well as top law schools (e.g., Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Yale).

Many have co‑authored publications in PNAS, JAMA Health Forum, Nature Sustainability, the American Economic Journal:
Economic Policy, and the Stanford Law Review.

About Us:

Stanford Lab is an impact laboratory partnering with government and nonprofit organizations to apply machine learning and data science for modernizing the public sector. Our interdisciplinary team—data scientists, social scientists, engineers, and lawyers—builds high‑impact demonstration projects. Partners include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Department of Labor (DOL), and various public‑interest organizations.

As a member of our research team, you will work closely with the Faculty Director, Research Director/Manager, data scientists, and teams of fellows and students to advance a diverse research program focused on machine learning and policy evaluation. The following tasks are designed to culminate in co‑authorship on peer‑reviewed research papers:

  • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment: conceptualize suitable empirical methodologies and models.
  • Collect, manage, and structure quantitative datasets.
  • Conduct statistical analyses of complex datasets and interpret results.
  • Design and implement state‑of‑the‑art machine learning models, algorithms, and statistical models.
  • Participate in literature searches, report writing, and manuscript preparation.
  • Present research findings to supervisors.
  • Ensure compliance with research protocols.
  • Orient and train new staff or students as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., computer science, data science, statistics, engineering, mathematics, economics) is required; an MS is preferred.
  • Creativity and a strong ability to learn quickly in a new work environment.
  • Self‑guided initiative and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Exceptional research, analytical writing, and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a proven ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Programming experience in R, Python, Stata, SAS, or other languages.
  • Prior research experience and coursework in empirical social sciences is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (Tensor Flow, PyTorch, Scikit‑Learn, etc.) and/or NLP or computer vision is a plus.
