Job Purpose

Employees in this classification perform journey‑level and high‑voltage electrician work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the electrical substations, electrical distribution systems and general low‑voltage utility controls under general supervision. Assignments are received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions or employees may be expected to schedule their own work, determine work priorities. At this level employees are expected to diagnose problems independently and determine the appropriate method and procedure needed to complete the work.

Core

Duties
  • Work in controlled access substations and high‑voltage power distribution systems (600 V AC and above).
  • Splice and terminate high‑voltage cables using manufacturer and hand tape methods.
  • Install, test, calibrate and repair all types of revenue meters, instruments and associated electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, monitor, repair and calibrate computer‑based SCADA systems, transducers, input devices, communication equipment and data transmission equipment.
  • Perform switching and maintenance in substations, switchyards, pad‑mounted equipment and underground vaults and may act as Person in Charge of such operations as directed.
  • Respond to power outages during off‑hours on a callback basis and troubleshoot and repair faulty equipment.
  • Test and repair short‑circuits, grounds and troubleshoot high‑voltage street‑light circuits.
  • Install new equipment, including conduit, wire, cable, pull boxes, transformers and related alterations in high‑voltage systems.
  • Assist the Systems Manager in overseeing contractors and ensuring safety regulations are followed.
  • Coordinate work to ensure the maintenance and integrity of the high‑voltage system and schedule system outages.
  • Oversee the work of an apprentice and ensure safety rules are followed.
Education & Experience

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program (or equivalent education and/or experience) for journey‑level electrician. Minimum 5 years of relevant experience with high‑voltage equipment (600 V AC and above); 10+ years of relevant experience preferred.

Preferred Requirements

California non‑commercial Class C Driver’s License; CPR and First Aid certification;
California State Electrical Certification preferred.

Physical & Work Conditions

High‑voltage electrical theory knowledge, ability to handle tools, work in awkward positions, moderate heavy lifting, ability to read schematic diagrams, diagnose and repair equipment, availability for overtime and callbacks. May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, inclement weather, confined spaces and elevated surfaces over ten feet.
