Plumber, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Plumber/Steamfitter – Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&D), Stanford University, San Jose, California
Job PurposePerform a variety of plumbing duties at the journey level, including steamfitter work on medium and low‑pressure steam and condensate systems within buildings.
Responsibilities- Perform plumbing functions per the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code on various pipe materials.
- Execute extensive preventive maintenance and provide emergency response actions.
- Complete duties assigned by a shop supervisor or lead with independence, subject to spot‑checks.
- Allocate at least 30% of responsibilities to steamfitter‑related tasks.
- Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot medium and low‑pressure steam and condensate systems, including convectors, radiators, coils, heat exchangers, steam tables, sterilizers, autoclaves, traps, valves, strainers, and pumps.
- May perform plumbing‑related welding if certified.
- Install, maintain, and repair domestic hot and cold water systems, heating systems, boilers, hot water tanks, heat exchangers, radiators, valves, and pumps.
- Install and maintain chilled water systems and related equipment.
- Install, maintain, and repair all plumbing fixtures such as faucets, sinks, bathtubs, toilets, water heaters, and garbage disposals.
- Inspect plumbing systems for malfunctions and perform repairs as needed.
- Cut, bend, solder, thread, and assemble pipes and fittings.
- Join pipes using flanges, fittings, solder, glue, or welding.
- Install, clean, maintain, and repair sanitary sewer lines and storm drainage systems.
- Install and repair pipe insulation systems.
- Maintain and repair fire protection sprinkler systems, including pipes and sprinkler heads.
- Install and repair gas lines and related equipment.
- Skilled in the use of tools, equipment, and methods of the plumbing trade.
- Journeyman plumber with approximately five years of trade experience, including apprenticeship or vocational training.
- Experience with medium and low‑pressure steam systems.
- Knowledge of the physical properties of steam and condensate and the equipment used to maintain these systems.
- Ability to use respiratory equipment and work in confined spaces or at high elevations.
- Journey‑level knowledge: four years in an apprenticeship program or equivalent education/work experience.
- Four years of actual work in the plumber/steamfitter trade.
- Valid California Non‑commercial Class C Driver’s license.
- Preferred: journeyman card in plumbing/steam fitting or other recognized technical credential.
- Apply twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, and forceful grasping.
- Frequently stand, walk, lift, carry, push, or pull objects up to 10 lb.
- Occasionally kneel, crawl, reach above shoulders, or fine grasp tools.
- Occasionally lift objects greater than 40 lb, perform desk‑based work, and use a telephone or sort/file paperwork.
- Be capable of lifting at least 50 lb and performing strenuous, repetitive work.
- Work outside in variable weather conditions.
- Wear required uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with colleagues, clients, and external organizations.
- Promote a culture of safety by demonstrating commitment to personal responsibility, communicating safety concerns, and using safe behaviors.
- Adhere to all applicable University policies and procedures, including the Administrative Guide and the collective bargaining agreement.
Expected pay: $54.78 per hour (Step 1). Placement is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
