Description

This position participates in the provision of lifeguarding services at city aquatics facilities.

Major Duties
  • Performs lifeguarding duties. Ensures the safety of guests by observing swimmers.
  • Enforces pool rules and regulations. Ensures all safety measures are observed.
  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and proper function of the facility.
  • Trains and receives proper Red Cross Lifeguard certifications.
  • Cleans grounds, locker rooms, and office.
  • Provides patrons with information and assistance.
  • Inspects facility and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Completes accurate incident and accident reports.
  • Responds to water emergencies and performs water rescues.
  • Administer First Aid as needed.
  • Sets up classroom and party room for events.
  • Complies with City and departmental rules, policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties.
Typical Qualifications
  • Must be at least 15 years of age at time of employment.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification at the time of employment.
  • Must pass a required swim test.
  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.

  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Aquatics Specialist and/or Head Lifeguard assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, Red Cross guidelines, and the employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related lifeguarding duties. The need to respond to emergency incidents contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform lifeguarding duties at a public pool. Success in this position contributes to the safety of patrons.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, reach, grasp, push, pull, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see and demonstrate manual dexterity. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

    The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions.
  • The work is typically performed on a pool deck and in an aquatic facility. The employee is exposed to sun, water, noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work may be performed outdoors in hot, cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
