This position functions under the general guidance and leadership of the Director of Parks, Culture and Recreation. This is a position that requires skilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties of a skilled and semi-skilled nature. Ongoing duties will involve maintenance, minor equipment repair, and maintaining property, including shrubs and plants, as well as irrigation, floors, and other areas. Using various hand and power tools, as well as maintenance and landscaping equipment, is a daily duty.
All work is performed in the elements, including heat and cold.

- Maintains and trims landscaping and grass at MLK Jr. Recreation Center.
- Set up and break down rooms for community events, meetings, sports leagues and performances.
- Maintain gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, fitness equipment and indoor walking areas.
- Maintains common areas and external areas free of debris and in excellent condition.
- Paints and maintains property.
- Perform routine cleaning of high-traffic public spaces, including restrooms, concession areas and seating areas.
- Ensure outdoor areas such as parking lots, sidewalks and entryways remain clean, safe and accessible.
- Support special events by assisting with crowd flow, signage placement and safety checks.
- Monitor facility and systems.
- Loads and unloads equipment, supplies, tools and materials.
- Remove and replace small patches of sod, sprinkler heads.
- Trim and prune trees and shrubbery.
- Fertilize and spray herbicides.
- Picks up trash.
- Assists in construction-based projects such as woodworking, concrete, etc.
- Custodial duties such as cleaning windows, bathrooms, vacuuming and cleaning carpets, dusting, emptying trash cans, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge and skills in the use of tools and equipment typical of manual labor work.
- Strong skills in the ability to evaluate tasks and utilize the best tools and processes to safely accomplish tasks.
- Skilled in maintaining multi-purpose recreational spaces for both sports and community events.
- Skilled in basic troubleshooting for facility-related issues such as lighting, sound and scoreboards.
- Knowledge of event setup standards, including seating configurations and staging.
- Understanding of safety protocols for large gatherings and recreational activities.
- Ability to understand and carry out multi-step oral and written instructions in a courteous, professional and efficient manner.
- Ability to operate mowers and a variety of other hand tools and equipment (power and manual) typically used in maintenance work.
- Ability to operate power and manual equipment typically used in landscaping, irrigation, and grounds keeping.
- Ability to perform manual labor work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and team-focused working relationships with team members, leadership, other departments and the general public.
- Ability to work with various types of chemicals used in cleaning, maintenance and surface work.
- Knowledge of safe operations in and around traffic areas.
- Ability to measure and make basic mathematical calculations.
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Three (3) years experience in manual labor maintenance and maintenance of facilities.
- Valid Driver’s License.
A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
