Maintenance Worker, Field/Service Technician
Apprentice (Panama City) –
TECO Peoples Gas
Location: Panama City, Florida
Shift: 8‑hour days, 5 days per week
What You’ll DoAssist in the layout, fabrication, and installation of gas distribution systems, including new construction and maintenance on commercial, residential, and industrial equipment. The apprentice will work in compliance with all company policies, procedures, safety standards, and will communicate professionally with personnel, customers, contractors, and the public.
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities- Turn on and off gas services, appliances, and equipment.
- Read meters and meter instruments.
- Perform line locator duties.
- Assist with installation, removal, change‑out, or upgrade of service regulators and meter sets.
- Assist with start‑up of conversion burners.
- Assist with installation and maintenance of underground/above‑ground distribution/transmission mains, services, equipment, and meter activity, including minor repairs and adjustments.
- Assist with plastic pipe fusion, tapping, and stopping operations.
- Operate hydraulic tools, backhoe, and other machines used in natural gas operations.
- Investigate interior and exterior natural gas leaks.
- Use a hand‑held radio device with internet capability to open and close assigned service orders.
- Use a laptop computer for mapping, work orders, training, and Employee Self Service.
- Work overtime as needed, including weekends and holidays during gas emergencies.
- Participate in a call‑out and on‑stand‑by schedule on a rotating basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Detect normal concentrations of natural gas odorant.
- Meet visual acuity requirements per DOT guidelines 49 CFR 391.41(b)(10).
- Meet hearing requirements per DOT guidelines 49 CFR 391.41(b)(11).
- Operate a vehicle safely and independently.

Assessment & Training Schedule- Basic Skills Test Battery (BSTB) – virtual assessment (8:00 AM–5:00 PM).
- Interview via Microsoft Teams (8:00 AM–5:00 PM, Monday‑Friday).
- New hire start training:
April 6, 2026. - Mandatory paid training: four weekdays, beginning April 6, 2026.
- Valid high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
- Basic map reading, power tool operation, communication device use.
- Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions).
- 1–2 years of natural gas or related utility experience (propane, pipe fitting, etc.).
- 2+ years of experience as a gas locator.
- Physically capable of indoor/outdoor manual labor.
- Must reside within 45 minutes of the Panama City office.
- Pass pulmonary function test for respiratory equipment use.
- Ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and similar structures.
- Maintain balance on narrow or slippery surfaces.
- Operate a vehicle safely.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch as required.
- Walk, stand, or sit for extended periods.
- Grip and manipulate small hand tools.
- Lift and carry objects up to 100 lbs.
- Vision correctable to 20/40.
- Hearing loss less than 40 dB at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz.
- Smell gas odorant at normal concentrations.
- Perform repetitive motions involving arms and hands.
- Write, type, and rotate body as needed.
- Work outdoors for extended periods.
- Basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry skills.
Successful applicants will complete a Baseline Medical Examination, a pre‑employment drug screening, and a background check (education, employment, criminal, and motor vehicle). A physical examination may be conducted as required.
