Come join the City of Long Beach! Our Community Recreation Services Bureau, in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, is seeking Recreation Program Leaders to assist with the Sports Program. The Youth & Adult Sports Programs offer year-round sports. The Youth Sports program focuses on developing fundamentals and good sportsmanship. Youth Sports Officials provide officiating in ball hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, t-ball, baseball, softball, flag football and volleyball.
Adult Sport programming will focus on gym management, record and scorekeeping as well as support to officials in Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball and Softball. (Must have working knowledge of sport, either leading/coaching a team or playing on a team.)
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part‑time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.
The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised after school and weekend activities at parks and schools.
In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
Responsibilities- Officiate assigned youth games in department-offered sports including basketball, ball hockey, indoor soccer, t-ball, baseball, softball, flag football, and volleyball, with an emphasis on fundamentals and good sportsmanship.
- Support Adult Sports programming through gym and field management, record and scorekeeping, and assistance to game officials in basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball.
- Prepare and maintain courts and/or fields for play, including setup, breakdown, and cleanup duties.
- Monitor and regulate games in accordance with program rules and procedures, including completing all required paperwork and scorekeeping.
- Ensure rosters, attendance, and required documents are submitted and maintained according to department guidelines.
- Maintain, distribute, and oversee proper use of sports equipment and supplies.
- Communicate clearly with participants, parents, and staff regarding schedules, rules, and program updates.
- Attend all required staff meetings, in-service trainings, and development sessions.
- Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of all participants at all times.
- Follow the department's dress code and maintain a professional appearance.
- Uphold the Department’s Code of Conduct and maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude while working with participants, staff, and community members.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by lead staff and/or supervisors.
- Must have working knowledge of sports, either leading/coaching a team or playing on a team.
- Must be at least 16 years of age (if under 18, must have valid permit to work).
- Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work and between game sites.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weeknights and weekends, at various park locations.
