Position Title:
Sewer Maintenance I
Reports To:Street Superintendent
Purpose of Position:Under direct supervision, learns and assists in performing semi-skilled work in support of the inspection, maintenance, and repair of Papillion’s sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems. Required to perform duties on an on-call basis, as needed. This is the entry-level class in the Sewer Maintenance series. This class is responsible for assisting other staff with various duties.
Essential Functions:- Assists in the maintenance of sanitary sewer system through use of high-pressure jetting, root cutting, and chemical application.
- Assists in the inspection of sewer system using mobile video equipment.
- Assists in the inspection and maintenance of storm sewers as needed.
- Operates various tools, equipment, and vehicles safely and according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Uses computer or other digital device to enter maintenance records and work order information into asset management software.
- Inspects, cleans, and performs preventative maintenance on assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles; refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
- Attends seminars and in-service training, as needed.
- Operates standard office equipment and applications including, but not limited to, computer, email, copier, telephone, etc.
- Establishes and maintains positive public relations with the general public, other employees, and municipal officials.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Participates in snow removal operations.
- Assists in other City activities such as Clean Up Days, Papillion Days, etc.
- Assists all divisions as required to accomplish the goals of the Public Works Department and the City of Papillion.
- Ability to accept and follow directions.
- Ability to learn and apply precautions necessary to work safely with and around fellow employees, the general public, areas of traffic, places of business, etc.
- Ability to learn and exercise the proper safety measures for working near or in confined and enclosed spaces.
- Ability to safely operate departmental tools, equipment, and vehicles pertaining to the duties performed.
- Ability to learn the geographical layout of assigned areas and traverse these areas safely and efficiently.
- Ability to plan and organize a personal work schedule, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a crew as the situation dictates.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to employ basic mechanical skills.
- Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in English.
- Ability to learn and apply City laws, policies, and regulations that impact departmental activities.
- Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, other employees, and municipal officials.
- Ability to maintain regular and dependable attendance on the job, including attendance and job performance for possibly prolonged periods of time when called out on short notice due to weather conditions, emergencies and similar situations of public necessity.
Working Conditions:
The prospective employee is required to stand or move for extended periods of time outdoors and in all types of weather, including extreme conditions, and must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various locations within the city.
