Job Duties
  • Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities with a knowledge of patient growth and development appropriate to patient ages.
  • Identify and document initial observation and assessment of the patient's needs for immediate nursing action.
  • Systematically and accurately assess nursing needs of the patient to detect pertinent changes in the clinical picture.
  • Select, plan, evaluate, and document care based on this assessment.
  • Assess, intervene, and document appropriately to meet patient educational, psychosocial, and discharge planning needs.
  • Initiate appropriate referrals to other departments, services, and/or outside agencies for patient care.
  • Give comprehensive patient care.
  • Initiate and follow through with patient and family teaching.
  • Consult with unit nursing leadership regarding significant changes in patient's condition.
  • Communicate relevant patient care information on shift-to-shift report.
  • Utilize patient care standards in clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with all members of the health care team.
  • Document pertinent information regarding patient's response to treatment and progression toward goals in patient's chart.
  • Complete Admission/Transfer Summary Sheet and/or Discharge Summary.
  • Transcribe physician's orders in patient chart accurately and timely when ward clerk not available.
  • Seek clarification of physician's orders that are unclear or inappropriate.
  • Interpret clinical data and notify physician promptly if immediate changes in management are indicated.
  • Administer intravenous medications in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Titrate medicated infusions as per physician's prescriptives, protocols, and standards.
  • Transport patients to operating room and from post anesthesia care unit.
  • Check that emergency equipment is on hand and in good working order.
  • Recognize and report malfunction or failure of equipment; take appropriate action to repair/replace such equipment.
  • Check policy and procedures on proper handling of sharps.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds by presenting findings on patients.
  • Apply principles of infection control and safety.
  • Assist in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Provide clinical supervision of LPNs, certified nursing assistants, ward clerks, and other ancillary staff.
  • Exhibit customer service with respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasant attitude, patience, and helpfulness.
  • Maintain department policies and procedures, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Assess gaps in policies and procedures and create necessary policies and procedures to fulfill these gaps.
  • Understand and adhere to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.
  • Be familiar with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.
  • Orient patient's family to new environment; develop rapport with patient's family.
  • Relieve the Nurse Manager/Clinical Director as required.
  • Assist in data collection and analysis of Quality Assurance/CQI monitors; participate in implementation of follow-up action.
  • Effectively utilize the hospital computer system as it pertains to job responsibilities and in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Participate actively on Quality Improvement committees as assigned.
  • Assist other personnel as needed.
  • Keep up-to-date with current trends pertinent to area of assignment.
  • Participate in continuing education activities; attend mandatory scheduled in-service programs; share information gained at conferences with colleagues.
  • Respond to hospital codes (Code 9, Code Blue, Nurse Control, etc.) as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the department and organization.
  • Attend monthly unit meetings.
