Nursing Instructor–Henry County 12‑month

This is a full‑time, fiscal year position reporting to the Dean of Health Sciences and assumes Nursing programmatic instructional activities for the needs and demands of the DSCC Nursing Department. This position has a focus for the Dyersburg State Community College Henry County Center; however, official workstation may change from campus and center dependent upon needs and demands of the Nursing Departments.

Duties include working with the Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing and Nursing Faculty for coordination of student classroom and clinical field experiences. This position will have the responsibility of coordinating and maintaining the activities of the Nursing Program at the DSCC Henry County Center. This position is pending grant approval.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • To devote an equivalent of 37.5 hours of work per week.
  • Responsible for 30 credit hours of Teaching Load Equivalency (TLE) per academic year.
  • Create a positive environment for learning.
  • Participate in development of policies and standards for the Department of Nursing.
  • Assist in classroom and lab (clinical and campus) instruction.
  • Monitor, grade, and evaluate students’ progress.
  • Become certified in and fully use the course management system for all classes.
  • Utilize technology in classroom and lab instruction.
  • Participate in professional and committee activities including serving on Nursing Department committees as assigned by the Dean and serving on college committees as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with clinical facilities to provide optimum clinical experience.
  • Flexibility to teach evening, weekend, and at both locations as needed (requires use of personal vehicle).
  • Teach a range of ages of students including nontraditional, returning adults.
  • Recruit students from the community to make DSCC’s Nursing program viable and competitive.
  • Practice a learning-centered educational philosophy and redesign courses to include research-based learning strategies such as service learning opportunities, learning communities, critical thinking skills, co-operative learning, and reading across the curriculum.
  • Work with colleagues to assess the effectiveness of courses and the nursing program, analyze the results, develop and implement improvement plans, and document the improvements each semester in the form prescribed by DSCC.
  • Participate in professional development and maintain membership in an appropriate regional, state and/or national organization related to your teaching at DSCC.
  • Assist in the identification and mentoring of adjunct instructors.
  • Review, implement, evaluate current Nursing curriculum. Revise and develop Nursing curriculum in cooperation with colleagues as needed; assist in preparation of schedules and in selection of textbooks (including e‑textbooks when appropriate).
  • Advise students, maintain regular office hours which are accessible to students and participate in college life and committee work of the College.
  • Actively communicate with colleagues and students using email, voice mail, text and other electronic means. Normally, responses are expected in no more than 72 hours.
  • Be trained and certified as a Master Advisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Desk work; travel will be required for college or program activities. Insignificant effort other than normal movement. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Minimal Hazard/Exposure:
Standard office settings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

Required Qualifications
  • MSN from an accredited institution.
  • Medical Surgical nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Recent Medical Surgical experience.
  • Must be eligible for Tennessee Registered Nurse licensure.
  • Must be able to teach in a variety of nursing courses such as Maternal Newborn, Pediatric, Mental Health and Medical Surgical.
  • Ability to communicate well in oral and written English.
