- Maintain the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection.
- Assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery.
- Before an operation, help set up the operating room and organize the sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions.
- Check, adjust, and operate equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.
- Maintain supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood, and glucose for use during operation.
- Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites, and transport, position patients on the table, and cover with sterile surgical drapes.
- Scrub hands and arms, put on sterile OR attire to work within the sterile field and handle the sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies used in the procedure.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments, and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.
- Help prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, hold retractors, cut sutures, and apply dressings as directed.
- Cleans and restocks the operating room.
- Adhere to The Joint Commission (TJC) professional standards and attend hospital in-service training sessions as directed. Provide age-appropriate care for all age groups.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
- Operating Room Technician Certification or prior experience required. A graduate of an accredited educational program for surgical technologists must receive certification by the 180th day after graduation.
- Minimum of one year of work experience in the operating room preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
