Job Description & How to Apply Below

Mountain Regional Water Special Service District operates a regional water system serving communities across western Summit County, Utah. Our system brings together groundwater wells, surface‑water treatment, pump stations, storage facilities, and a 40 square mile distribution network across challenging mountain terrain.

Continued growth in the area creates engineering challenges involving water supply, planning, water quality, sustainability, and capital improvements. Our Engineering and Development team works closely with the Technology and Operation departments to keep the system running today while planning for the community’s long‑term needs.

THE INTERNSHIP

We are looking for a civil or environmental engineering student who wants broad, practical experience with a working public water system. This internship offers a mix of engineering analysis, fieldwork, system operations, design, and construction experience—not one narrow assignment for the entire summer.

The intern will work closely with the Water Resources engineer and experienced water‑system operators on projects that may include:

  • Learning, maintaining, and improving a complex, actively used hydraulic model.
  • Applying the model to system capacity, pressure, water age, water quality, and flushing.
  • Supporting major capital projects, including design review, construction observation, field documentation, and project coordination.
  • Assisting with water‑loss analysis, energy‑efficiency projects, and other sustainability efforts.
  • Collecting and evaluating field data from facilities throughout the District’s service area.
  • Preparing maps, exhibits, calculations, and technical documentation using GIS and other engineering tools.
  • Working alongside operations staff to understand how engineering decisions affect the day‑to‑day performance of a drinking‑water system.
  • Supporting the District’s asset management program by collecting and organizing infrastructure data, documenting asset condition, and helping prioritize maintenance and future capital improvements.

The District is beginning construction on a major surface‑water treatment plant expansion in 2027, providing an unusual opportunity to gain exposure to treatment‑process design and real construction activity.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The intern will receive mentoring from District engineers and opportunities to work with operators, consulting engineers, contractors, regulators, and other water professionals. Professional development may also include participation in project meetings, local industry events, professional organizations, and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Currently pursuing a degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources, or a related field.
  • Interest in drinking‑water infrastructure, hydraulic modeling, water quality, or public utility engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively in both office and field environments.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel or similar tools.
  • Experience with GIS, CAD, hydraulic modeling, or engineering data analysis is helpful but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
SCHEDULE

This is a paid internship beginning in summer 2027. The anticipated summer schedule is approximately 32 hours per week, with the potential to continue approximately 12 hours per week during the spring and fall semesters. The work will be primarily in person at the District’s Park City office and facilities throughout its service area.
