Position: Casual Residential Community Support Workers )

The Program

Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of persons in their communities through a variety of programs and services. Orca House provides culturally-based programming, support and safe, home-based accommodations for youth in the care of Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). The resource is a staffed 24‑hour resource providing a long‑term therapeutic placement for up to 3 children or youth.

The resource supports children or youth who have experienced trauma, are addressing adverse childhood experiences and/or overcoming other adversities. The program staff will network with and work alongside a team of professionals supporting the youth in many life domains such as education, mental health, physical health, recreation and life skills.

The Position

We are currently hiring for the following roles, in a casual/on‑call capacity, with the opportunity to apply for part‑time and full‑time positions as they become available:

  • Residential Child and Youth Workers – $27.54‑$31.61
  • Residential Child and Youth Workers with overnight scheduling – $27.54‑$31.61

Once hired, casual/on‑call employees are contacted to work a variety of shifts (based on availability) to cover staff illness, LOA, vacation, etc. located in Parksville, BC.

Employees must be available to work a variety of roles and shifts such as weekdays, weekends and evenings. Example shift blocks may include:

  • 07:00‑15:00
  • 08:00‑16:00
  • 15:00‑23:00
  • 16:00‑24:00
  • 23:00‑07:00
  • 24:00‑08:00
In Your Role You Will
  • Participate in assessing, setting goals for and evaluating progress of persons served.
  • Teach persons served to relate in a socially appropriate manner through daily routines and activities.
  • Monitor persons served and ensure their safety and wellbeing; utilize practices that promote health, welfare, safety and security.
  • Provide behaviour‑management counseling on a one‑to‑one and/or group basis, including feedback, coping techniques and adaptive behaviour guidance.
  • Provide emotional support and crisis intervention, including non‑violent physical interventions.
  • Ensure communication and liaison between program, school, family and community.
  • Ensure physical needs of persons served are met, including basic personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
  • Administer medications according to established guidelines, procedures and instructions.
  • Maintain reports such as statistics, logbooks and daily activities relating to persons served.
  • Carry out household duties such as meal preparation and cleaning.
  • Accompany persons served to appointments and community outings.
  • Participate in the OHS Committee as required.
  • Operate motor vehicles safely and legally while transporting persons served or on Taproot business.
  • Advocate effectively for persons served.
  • Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as required.
  • Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary by province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.
As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
  • Child and Youth Care Degree or Diploma OR a Diploma or Degree in one of the humanities, social work or related field. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years recent related experience in child and youth care, emergency shelter or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Previous experience with trauma‑informed practice.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract with a reliable, safe vehicle that has appropriate insurance.
Other Requirements
  • Valid CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, and Food Hygiene and Sanitation certificates (or ability to obtain within probation period).
  • Non‑Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certificate (NVCI) and/or MANDT and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within probation period).
  • Prior experience with implementing Behavioural Interventions.
  • Prior experience in Trauma‑Informed Practices.

Successful applicants will be required to participate in MCFD screening prior to confirmed employment with Taproot Community Support Services.
