Position Overview

The Operations Leader – Animal Care promotes and ensures efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. The leader coaches and mentors all Pet Care Center partners in process support, guest experience, and animal care. They train, develop, support operations scheduling, and lead a high‑performing team that delivers the department's budgeted sales goals, gross margin, animal, and merchandise shrink targets.

The leader also manages all aspects of the Pet Care Center's business in accordance with Petco operational standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities
  • Utilize business acumen to measure, analyze and diagnose business trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well‑being of live animals by providing correct care in accordance with Petco standards, including hourly animal health checks and wellness cards.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocol for all sick animals.
  • Process register transactions to create a great guest experience.
  • Be proficient within our selling model and support guest interactions as needed.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching partners in areas including animal care, aquatics and companion animal maintenance, ordering, regulatory compliance, CAPI, HAHC, CAPC, and Vet Care/Relationships.
  • Order live animals efficiently to maximize sales, margin and inventory; analyze inventory data and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards and ensure all animal‑related maintenance tasks are completed as outlined on the Maintenance Task List.
  • Achieve high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with the Operations Leader – Merchandising to ensure proper in‑stock merchandise levels, reporting max changes or overrides and achieving I.M. grade.
  • Handle and document all adoption animals properly.
  • Maintain knowledge of PCC Sales and Margin reports and data.
  • Lead, provide feedback, and coach all PCC partners to deliver quality service and satisfy Petco guest needs.
  • Partner with PCC Leaders to maintain proper partner scheduling for in‑stock goals and guest service levels during peak hours.
  • Apply talent‑management skills for recruiting, hiring, training, work scheduling, coaching and succession planning.
  • Provide quick and courteous service to all guests by determining their needs, sharing product knowledge, and suggesting appropriate merchandise using our selling strategy.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support implementation and execution of Omni‑Channel through training and coaching partners in BOPUS, Ship‑from‑store, Curbside, Endless Aisle, and overall Guest Experience.
  • Act as Leader on Duty for supporting Pet Care Center execution, training, communication, maintenance of company initiatives, programs, legal compliance, policies, procedures, safety practices, and promotions.
  • Train, coach, and develop Pet Care Center operations partners in close partnership with the sales team.
  • Promote a positive leadership culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
  • Display and champion the Petco Leadership Expectations.
