Job DescriptionJob Summary: The Deaf Education Interpreter provides interpreting and other support services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in all aspects of the educational environment. The Interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system.
QUALIFICATIONSRequired:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Proficient command (receptive and expressive) of sign language systems.
- Must be able to change schedule and daily routines on short notice.
- Must have proficient technology skills commonly found in classroom environments.
- Must be in good standing with partnering district(s) where program is located.
- Post-Secondary degree and/or relevant certification/licensure.
- Level 3 or higher on the EIPA, KQAS or possess a RID national certification.
- Experience working with students with special needs in the school setting.
- Effectively communicate solutions to complex problems.
Essential Functions:
- Demonstrate the ability to adjust interpretation (signing and voicing) to match the level of sophistication of the language mode/system used by the recipient of services.
- Interpret classroom lectures, assignments, demonstrations, announcements, videos (if closed caption is unavailable, or if the student is unable to utilize captioning), group activities or discussions and student interactions.
- Provide necessary clarification, elaboration, or adjustments in an interpreted message due to differences in knowledge base, culture, language, or experiences.
- Participate as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, re‑evaluation process, and IEP process.
- Interpret for special situations such as organizational or class meetings, conferences with principal or counselor, IEP meetings, and other school‑related activities.
- Participate in off‑campus activities and field trips.
- Maintain timely documentation.
- Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the the interlocal and local district.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
- Maintain strict confidentiality as outlined by FERPA and HIPAA.
- Ability to work alone and in groups to provide services.
- Maintain professional relationships with families.
- Assume responsibility for individual professional growth by staying current with literature, research, and/or practices.
- Demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with other employees of the interlocal/district and constituents.
- Complete all assignments in a timely manner including communication with other staff and families.
- Follow all safety requirements as directed by the interlocal.
- Regular and predictive attendance in designated work location.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Lifting up to 40 pounds.
- Manage all job duties with mobility, agility, and dexterity.
- Sit/stand for long periods of time.
- Work in loud/stressful environments.
- Ability to drive in varying weather and geographical conditions.
- Being exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.
- Being exposed to hazardous materials.
- Being exposed to work settings that offer a risk to personal security and that are not ADA compliant.
Salary
According to Classified Pay Scale and/or starting rate, set by board annually; base for interpreter $15.45/hr
