California Institute of Technology seeks a Head Coach for our Women's Tennis program. This is a temporary 6‑month position located in Pasadena, California. Caltech is a world‑renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions. The Head Coach of Women’s Tennis will administer all aspects of the sport program—including coaching, recruiting, game scheduling, student development, budget management, and compliance with NCAA Division 3 and conference rules—while also teaching a physical‑education class and participating in the college community.
Job Duties
- Demonstrate excellent teaching and coaching competencies with regard to sport skill instruction, motivation, tactical strategies, and physical training and fitness in practices and contests.
- Design and execute a competitive schedule for intercollegiate contests that maximizes individual and collective student‑athlete development and performance, prioritizing conference play while maintaining an academically rigorous educational experience.
- Recruit, matriculate, retain, and graduate student‑athletes capable of earning a baccalaureate degree in sufficient quantity to maintain a competitive team roster.
- Conduct recruitment activities, including identification and evaluation of prospects, communication strategy, record keeping, hosting campus visits, and traveling to market the Institute as needed.
- Provide student‑athletes with opportunities for social, emotional, and academic development through close interpersonal guidance, mentoring, and counseling.
- Manage a cost‑effective and administratively efficient sport program on a budget, including purchasing, inventory control of equipment and uniforms, team travel, and a national recruitment program.
- Participate in marketing, public relations, civic and community outreach, and fundraising activities for the department and sport.
- Develop collaborative working relationships with department colleagues, administration, faculty, and other college personnel in a spirit of integration and community with a common mission, including collaboration with service/support functions such as SID, equipment, and ATC.
- Demonstrate effective communication in all aspects of the role, including writing, speaking, listening, and non‑verbal skills.
- Teach up to one beginner physical‑education class per term as required by the undergraduate curriculum.
- Adhere to NCAA, conference, institute, and department rules and expectations, upholding the highest professional and ethical standards.
- Assume additional responsibilities assigned by the Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, which may include facility supervision and maintenance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Physically teach, run, play, instruct, and demonstrate tennis and related conditioning skills.
- Lifting, carrying, and loading sport‑specific equipment.
- Set up and tear down sports‑contest support equipment.
- Maintain general athletic facilities as needed.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Organized competitive coaching experience in an educational setting.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, judgment, and integrity.
- Strong computing skills including database manipulation, email and calendar savvy, technological teaching tools, video analysis, and manipulation.
- Passion and ability for personal growth and learning.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, and move at least 50 lbs. of equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain it throughout employment.
- First‑Aid, CPR, and safety training, or the ability to obtain the credential immediately.
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Collegiate head or assistant coaching experience at a Division 3 institution.
- Collegiate sports playing experience.
