Overview

We are currently looking to add a full time intermediate-level Geological Engineer or Engineering Geologist to our hydropower and dams group within the energy business line in Southern California (Pasadena, Irvine, or San Diego offices). The successful candidate will build on their existing technical knowledge base to work on challenging and diverse tasks for dams, hydropower projects, conveyance tunnels, and water resource projects for a variety of domestic and international clients.

The position will provide stimulating career growth opportunities including mentoring of less experienced staff and may require travel to project sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to undertake infrastructure projects related to planning, design, and engineering.
  • Follow safe work practices and adhere to company guidelines for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
  • Work in conjunction with engineers, geologists, and other professionals to solve project challenges, performing design calculations as required.
  • Assist with feasibility studies by conducting research (desktop study, field reconnaissance) to assess challenges and develop the basis of geological/geotechnical understanding of the program to support the project as it progresses.
  • Plan and implement field exploration and testing programs.
  • Conduct geologic mapping to support various types of field programs.
  • Perform site characterizations and evaluate geological hazards.
  • Assess subsurface conditions, including soil and rock properties and geological conditions, and review and interpret field maps, field logs, test data, and other field documentation.
  • Evaluate field and laboratory test data and develop parameters for use in technical analyses.
  • Conduct numerical analysis using programs such as SEEP/W, SLOPE/W, DIPS, UNWEDGE, SWEDGE, Phase 2.
  • Develop familiarity with regulatory agency requirements, technical design standards, and industry standards and guidelines.
  • Prepare technical reports including geotechnical data reports, baseline reports, field reports, technical memoranda, computation packages, feasibility reports, design and evaluation reports, construction drawings, and specifications.
  • Attend project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
  • Implement Stantec quality control and quality assurance processes for project deliverables.
  • Provide field oversight for projects during investigation or construction phases.
  • Provide leadership, coordination, and ownership of tasks from initiation to successful completion.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and training of less experienced professionals, as required.
  • Develop client management and business development skills, such as preparing proposals.
  • Participate in professional development and training activities.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Working knowledge of the principles of engineering geology, geological or geotechnical engineering.
  • Some exposure to or knowledge of geotechnical analysis.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Sound organizational, technical, written, and oral communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to coordinate tasks with multiple individuals on a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Willing and able to travel to conduct field investigation or construction quality oversight work.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Off‑road driving may be possible.
Education and Experience
  • 5–10 years of work experience in engineering geology or geological engineering. Dams experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
