Position: Deputy City Attorney (Prosecution Division)

The Pasadena City Attorney/City Prosecutor's Office is seeking a Deputy City Attorney in the Prosecution Division to represent the People of the State of California and Pasadena in superior and appellate courts. The ideal candidate will prosecute jury and court trials and represent the People in misdemeanor cases without courtroom supervision.

The ideal candidate will take initiative and work independently in coordinating the review and disposition of cases, interviewing victims and witnesses, appearing in court, and representing the People of the State of California.

The position will focus on a variety of criminal cases with an emphasis on handling cases from review and filing through resolution and disposition.

Major Responsibilities
  • Reviews law enforcement reports and cases to determine whether to file, reject, or to refer for an office hearing or pre-filing diversion in compliance with state and municipal laws.
  • Implements office policies and procedures relating to the disposition of cases.
  • Reviews criminal misdemeanor cases; researches, reviews, and drafts motions, oppositions, in limine motions, and appellate briefs.
  • Interviews victims and witnesses; represents the People in all misdemeanor court appearances.
  • Conducts court hearings, trials, motions, and restitution hearings; responsible for discovery.
  • Responds to inquiries from defense attorneys, witnesses, police, and others.
  • Researches legal issues and provides legal opinions and advice to law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Trains law enforcement personnel and colleagues on developments and effective prosecution techniques.
  • Assists other prosecutors in all phases of legal work on the more complex cases; attends meeting where prosecution matters are discussed.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the operation of the Prosecution Division.
  • Handles special projects as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • At least three years of professional experience as a practicing attorney with relevant trial and court experience in criminal law.
  • Applicants with experience as a prosecutor in a government agency or practicing criminal defense attorney will be deemed most qualified.
Selection Process

The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, interview panel, and department-level interviews.
