Position Summary

The Director of Institutional Giving leads and directs all grant related activities and revenue goal achievement in a fast-paced entrepreneurial nonprofit. The non-profit journalism field has transformed rapidly in recent decades. Technological changes are impacting how information is distributed and how communities engage with the news and each other, as well as how journalism is funded. SCPR is looking for a proactive development professional energized by philanthropic opportunities in the changing nonprofit media sector, ready to learn, and eager to collaborate across the organization.

The Director leads a highly visible and pivotal fundraising team within SCPR with responsibility for developing a comprehensive, annual plan to maintain and increase corporate and foundation grant for a wide variety of programs and projects. The Director has deep knowledge of the regional and national foundation landscape and is skilled at spotting emerging opportunities within the corporate and foundation funder community, strategically weaving internal capabilities into a compelling case to positively impact giving.

In addition, this position skillfully facilitates relationships between corporate and institutional partners and the President, Chief Content Officer, Senior Vice President, Development, and other senior leaders at SCPR – to build relationships and grow institutional support. This position focuses on securing grants of six- and seven-figure plus grants.

Expected Compensation Range

$145,000 - $155,000 USD annualized. The exact rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Position Responsibility

Successfully manage and grow annual fund, campaign and special project grant revenue. This position has significant external responsibilities for building relationships with the leadership of major local and national foundations in addition to directing the internal grant seeking process.

External Responsibilities

• Maintain ongoing awareness of the specific opportunities and challenges within the corporate and foundation journalism funding community.

• Build and grow our network of relationships that support institutional giving growth.

• Maintain focus on seizing new opportunities, planned approaches and solid execution to support institutional giving.

• Create strategic relationships between external partners, public media colleagues and internal leaders to achieve best-in‑class institutional giving outcomes.

• Cultivate relationships with major funders and prospects to broaden networks, identify potential funding opportunities and solicit support.

• Work with VP/Development to engage Development Committee members and members of the Board of Trustees to cultivate relationships with major funders and prospects to broaden networks, identify potential funding opportunities, and solicit support.

• Broadly communicate the overall SCPR strategy for grant funding.

Internal Responsibilities

• Work with Chief Content Officer, senior management and finance to identify ongoing and potential projects suitable for grant funding.

• Monitor and understand changes in the local and non‑profit media sector to guide SCPR’s leadership team in positioning a media organization to grantmaking institutions.

• Lead staff in the creation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of annual and multi‑year grant funding strategies designed to maximize financial support.

• Lead staff in researching and identifying potential funders and creating strategies.

• Lead the writing and editing of fundable proposals.

• Facilitate cross‑functional teams as necessary for grant development and fulfillment.

• Provide overall oversight of the grant seeking and grants administration processes.

• Implement a process and develop materials for regular communications with funders and prospects.
