Impact Analyst, Oil and Gas Sector About Carbon Mapper

Carbon Mapper is a non‑profit organization based in Pasadena, CA with the mission to drive greenhouse gas emission reductions by making methane and carbon dioxide data accessible and actionable. We leverage remote sensing technology to detect, pinpoint, and quantify methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at the scale of individual facilities. All of our methane and CO2 data is made publicly available for non‑commercial use on our Carbon Mapper Data Portal to provide decision makers with the information they need to prioritize and take mitigation action.

Carbon Mapper also works with stakeholders and decision makers to fill data gaps, lead on cutting‑edge science, collaborate to drive reductions, and advance education and insights on emissions globally. To do this, we work with partners to leverage a constellation of satellites. Data from these satellites will offer the next major step in scaling up the organization’s robust data portal featuring thousands of direct observations of global methane and CO2 super‑emitters.

About

The Role

Carbon Mapper is seeking an Impact Analyst, Oil and Gas Sector, to help expand the use and understanding of Carbon Mapper’s methane data in support of meaningful emissions reductions. This role will support the Impact team through a blend of data and policy analysis, impact tracking, project management, and stakeholder engagement.

The analyst will help to translate complex methane data into clear, actionable insights for governments, industry partners, and civil society organizations. Key responsibilities include supporting data collection and attribution processes, summarizing and tracking methane emission trends and policy frameworks; developing evidence‑based recommendations; and contributing to reports, briefings, and other materials that advance effective climate action.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working with technical datasets, and motivated by the opportunity to drive methane reductions in the oil and gas sector as part of the global effort to curb climate-warming emissions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Data Collection and Attribution
  • Integrate remote sensing data with complementary datasets (e.g., oil and gas infrastructure maps) to contextualize emissions and support equipment-level attribution of methane plumes.
  • Support the development, execution, and tracking of oil and gas sector satellite tasking to ensure impact objectives and priorities are met.
  • Coordinate with research partners and stakeholders to leverage data from remote sensing technologies and field-based measurement tools to monitor and understand methane emissions.
Research and Analysis
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of methane emissions, emissions inventories, and related sectoral data, translating findings into clear, actionable narratives for predominantly non-scientific audiences.
  • Analyze methane mitigation policies and regulations—including their implementation—by assessing the effectiveness of existing initiatives and identifying gaps or opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to the development of clear visualizations, dashboards, and summary metrics that communicate trends and insights effectively.
  • Support the creation of high-quality research papers, policy briefs, and technical reports for diverse audiences.
  • Stay current on emerging insights related to methane emissions, mitigation policies, and technologies in the oil and gas sector.
Project Management
  • Maintain internal documentation and tracking systems to support impact measurement, relationship management, and information sharing for oil and gas sector priorities and projects.
  • Support project management for special projects and strategic initiatives, including coordination with key partner organizations.
Stakeholder Engagement and Science Communications
  • Support the Impact team by engaging with oil and gas sector stakeholders to communicate Carbon Mapper’s work, identify areas for collaboration, and coordinate…
