Computational, Analytical and Experimental Thermodynamics to Investigate the Presence, Stability, and Implications of Organic Matter in Ocean Worlds
Join to apply for the Computational, Analytical and Experimental Thermodynamics to Investigate the Presence, Stability, and Implications of Organic Matter in Ocean Worlds role at ORAU
.
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at an affiliated research institute. These fellowships are competitive, designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Responsibilities- Characterize the inventory and stability of organic compounds representative of that in the interiors of ocean worlds.
- Obtain thermodynamic properties such as densities and heat capacities of insoluble organic matter through experimental, analytical, and computational methods.
- Investigate the consequences of the presence of organic matter in the interiors of ocean worlds, including effects on structure, evolution, and potential life.
- Use a suite of experimental, analytical, and numerical techniques—including pressurized calorimeters, Raman and infrared spectrometers, and thermodynamic and geophysical models—to constrain the physical and chemical properties of organic matter, minerals, and geologic fluids plausibly present in ocean world oceans.
- A PhD in Planetary Science, Earth Science, Geochemistry, Cosmochemistry, or a related field is required at the start of the appointment.
- Wet chemistry lab experience is essential.
- Experience or prior training in thermodynamics and programming (Python/Matlab/R), and analytical techniques (Raman, infrared spectroscopy) is desirable.
- Experience with cryogens and high-pressure vessels is beneficial; mandatory training will be provided.
