GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESPerforms law enforcement work relating to animal control; does related work as required, and any other duties assigned by the City Manager or the Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES- Patrols City in pick-up truck with animal cage; picks up stray animals and transports them to pound
- Maintains contact with headquarters by using two-way radio set
- Disposes of animals according to city ordinances and policies
- Signs affidavits on violations of City ordinances pertaining to animal control
- Picks up and buries dead animals in the City
- Impounds, feeds, and cares for animals
- Keeps close surveillance over suspected rabid animals confined in pound
- Maintains the City Pound
- Good knowledge of the City streets and City ordinances regarding the confinement of animals
- Good knowledge of the symptoms of rabies
- Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public
- Ability to prepare activity reports
- Ability to operate a light truck and two-way radio
- Ability to handle large and/or vicious animals
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public
- Requires the ability to stand, sit, walk and drive for substantial periods of time
- Requires the ability to lift 50 pounds maximum; frequent lifting and/or carrying up to 25 pounds
- Must be able to use hands and fingers to operate equipment such as firearms, tranquilizer guns, and traps
- Some experience in the care and handling of animals and completion of high school
- Valid driver’s license is required
