Substation Project Structural Engineer – HDR

OverviewAs a key member of the Power Delivery team, you will lead the structural design for high‑voltage switchyards and substations up to 500 kV. You’ll analyze steel and foundation systems, produce detailed calculations, and guide the coordination of specifications and construction documents.
Responsibilities- Design and detail substation steel members (rolled shapes, lattice framing, folded plates, tubular shapes) with calculations for fabrication.
- Develop foundation designs for drilled piers, spread footings and piles using industry‑standard software.
- Prepare and review construction specifications and material requirements.
- Assign tasks to EITs, provide technical guidance to non‑structural team members.
- Perform quality checks and reviews of deliverables in accordance with HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS). Participate in peer reviews as needed.
- Collaborate with engineers to develop and maintain project standards.
- Mentor and train junior engineers and designers.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects in collaboration with teams in different locations.
- Participate in project reviews and plan to travel occasionally.
- Experience with high‑voltage switchyard and substation design.
- Knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and other industry standards.
- Proficiency in PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience in foundation and steel structural engineering.
- Familiarity with AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318 and other relevant codes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; self‑starter and problem‑solver.
- Team player who can work independently.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or P.Eng license valid in the state of employment.
- Prior structural engineering experience in a consulting environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar tools.

Target salary: $90 682 – $145 990, depending on experience, location and education. Full‑time benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, retirement plan with employer match, paid leave, and tuition reimbursement.
Primary LocationCharlotte, North Carolina; additional locations across the U.S. are available.
