Join to apply for the Mine Construction Engineer role at Stantec

Stantec helps deliver the critical minerals needed to power our world, from the cars we drive to the infrastructure powering our communities. We design the largest, deepest, and most technically challenging mines in the world—including mine remediation projects—sustainably, helping clients reduce energy usage, adopt clean energy sources, and implement digital solutions and automation.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a safety‑focused leader with construction field experience to oversee field engineering and construction quality control on a mine remediation project near Spokane, Washington. The position is a full‑time onsite role with a 2‑year minimum commitment, and the possibility to extend beyond. Qualified candidates will have relevant field experience and a degree in engineering or geology (or comparable experience).

The role requires leadership, daily interaction with clients, and the application of geotechnical engineering and mine reclamation design. Work shift is 4 days per week, 10‑hour shifts plus a one‑hour drive each way (total 48 hours per week).

The Construction Engineer will support construction planning, communicate plans to contractors, identify problems, deficiencies, and design deviations, and develop potential courses of action. Strong leadership of the Stantec field team, delegation of tasks, clear communication, and attention to detail are essential.

This Position Will Require
  • An individual who can arrive on site on time in a rugged environment and meet mental and physical challenges.
  • Working daily with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Traversing steep slopes, sometimes multiple times per day.
  • The ability to safely drive and work around heavy equipment.
  • Leading and attending daily, weekly, and monthly meetings.
  • Curiosity and creativity to contribute to a multi‑year reclamation project.
  • Troubleshooting and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Detail‑oriented in verbal and written communication, data collection, and review.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Evaluating and revising designs for improved constructability with drafting support.
  • Organized and able to work on multiple tasks and deliverables simultaneously.
Specific Activities
  • Create and maintain a high‑functioning safety culture, track compliance with safe work practices, and adhere to company and client guidelines and policies. OSHA HAZWOPER and supervisor training will be required.
  • Use and master field equipment (Trimble survey equipment, portable X‑ray fluorescence spectrometer, electronic density gauge).
  • Contribute to construction and design solutions, as‑built construction records, and other field engineering activities using AutoCAD Civil3D and Trimble Business Center.
  • Plan, coordinate, direct, and execute field team activities and documentation, including field observations, sample collection, field testing, and daily field reports.
  • Review and respond to technical memoranda, RFIs, and as‑built reports.
  • Provide supervision and direction for QA activities (sample collection, gradation analyses, material density testing, and surveying).
  • Interact daily with client management, engineering, and field staff to plan and execute field engineering and CQA activities.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a B.S. in engineering or geology, an associate’s degree with strong surveying skills, a professional surveying license, or comparable experience.
  • 8–12 years of field work on environmental, civil, and/or geotechnical engineering projects, focusing on construction planning, detailed design, site investigation, and technical communication. Preference for mine remediation/reclamation experience and survey experience.
  • Exceptional technical writing, verbal communication, and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional technical leadership abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in remote sites.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D and typical professional software packages (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat).
