Overview

The Corrections Deputy performs activities related to the receipt, booking, custody, transport and care of offenders under the jurisdiction of Franklin County, in accordance with established policies and procedures. The Deputy ensures fair and reasonable treatment of offenders and the maintenance of a safe, secure, and sanitary corrections facility, prioritizing the health, welfare, safety, and security of offenders, staff, volunteers, contracted staff, and visitors.

Positions in the Corrections Deputy classification are distinguished by responsibility for care of offenders and maintenance of facility security.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Receive and process new offenders. Conduct searches; collect, record and maintain offender personal property; review confinement orders; complete bookings, fingerprints, photographs and housing assignments.
  • Input and update electronic and written files; complete incident, general, arrest, and statistical reports to meet legal requirements.
  • Assure custody of offenders in transit to court appearances, medical facilities, or other correctional institutions.
  • Coordinate offender court appearances by classification to ensure safe proceedings; update court-related information in the Jail Management System (dispositions, sentencing, release dates).
  • Operate electronic security equipment (touch screens, doors, security cameras) in a control room; observe offender and visitor movement, programs, and activities to maintain security and access.
  • Conduct formal head, in-place and picture card counts; record count statistics in area logbooks for accountability of offenders housed at the Franklin County Corrections Center.
  • Conduct frisk, pat-down, area, and cell searches to limit contraband.
  • Inspect all living and program areas to ensure they meet established policy for cleanliness and operation.
  • Arrange for offender release according to policy; assist in coordination of work release program (admitting offenders, verifying employment, logging in/out, collecting and posting work release fees).
  • Draft and submit written reports concerning events and incidents; ensure reports are completed per policy and procedures.
  • Provide for basic needs of offenders (meal service, medication pass, basic first aid) on a routine basis.
  • Understand and implement the Franklin County Corrections Center Emergency Response Plan for emergent incidents.
  • Assist with commissary program (collect order forms, distribute items, inventory).
  • Enforce Franklin County Corrections Center rules; write infractions and issue warnings for rule violations.
  • Respond to inquiries, complaints or requests for information from offenders, staff, or the general public within scope of knowledge and authority, or refer as appropriate.
  • Provide training or work direction to less experienced Corrections Deputies as directed by chain of command.
  • Coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as data entry.
  • Exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work; include climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs from floor to counter (approx. 36" high).
  • Recognize and identify differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds and odors related to job tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of principles and techniques in offender care, custody and control and related law enforcement aspects.
  • Ability to read, learn, interpret and apply laws applicable to the assignment.
  • Ability to acquire skill in the use and care of firearms and the conditions under which they may be employed per county policy.
  • Ability to possess, manipulate, maintain and control a firearm.
  • Ability to physically handle and control offenders resisting directives.
  • Ability to maintain composure and self-control under adverse conditions (e.g., harassment, emergencies).
  • Ability to remain ready to respond to abnormal facility conditions at all times.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, probation officers, attorneys, courts, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to perform duties and maintain professional conduct, appearance, and attitude in line with strict policies and expectations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain attendance in accordance with policies and applicable agreements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; specialized training in corrections, security, police, military, or criminal law; and one year of work experience in law enforcement, emergency services, or public-facing roles; or any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and abilities.
