Key responsibilities include:

  • Studying blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measuring, marking, and scribes dimensions and reference points in material or work pieces as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selecting, aligning, and securing holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials in machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculating and setting controls to regulate machining factors like speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or entering commands for computerized machine control media.
  • Starting and observing machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusting machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifying the conformance of finished work pieces to specifications.
  • Setting up and operating machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Fitting and assembling parts into complete assemblies.
  • Verifying dimensions and alignment of assemblies.
  • Developing specifications from general descriptions and drawing sketches of parts or products to be fabricated.
  • Consulting with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Heat treating tools or parts.
