Responsibilities
  • Assist the RN in implementing a care plan for the patient in the Operating Room.
  • Performs scrub duties under supervision of the RN.
  • Maintains strict aseptic technique and follows standard precautions and infection control policies.
  • Anticipates surgeon’s needs and provides instruments, supplies and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Organizes and maintains instrumentation and supplies; prepares the procedure room and opens supplies using strict aseptic technique.
  • Ensures patient safety in all aspects of job activities and assists with patient transport and positioning as needed.
  • Counts and monitors sponges and sharps, reports discrepancies, and assists the circulating nurse as required.
  • Assists with room turnover, equipment check, and case cart preparation for current and upcoming procedures.
  • Assists with decontamination, cleaning, and turnover of rooms and equipment between cases.
  • Maintains and stocks supplies and equipment and coordinates with anesthesia and other team members to ensure availability for cases.
  • Assists with scheduling support and preparation of the day’s procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of medications used by physicians and adheres to safety protocols for handling them.
  • Supports in-room patient comfort and safety and assists with various procedures as needed (e.g., radio frequency).
  • Performs decontamination and sterilization of instruments following AAMI standards.
  • Participates in continuous improvement and follows policies to protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; graduate of an approved surgical technologist certification program.
  • One to three years of operating room experience; experience in ambulatory surgical centers and orthopedic settings preferred.
  • Working knowledge of office equipment and software; familiarity with HIPAA and regulatory policies.
  • Medical office procedures, practices and terminology, and professional etiquette; understanding of electronic medical systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with patients, staff, and the public; demonstrates empathy and tact.
  • Promotes teamwork, maintains confidentiality, and functions professionally within a medical environment.
