- Responsible for the orthopedic casting, bracing, and splinting of patients in an outpatient setting on the order of referring clinician.
- Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints in accordance with physician and/or physician assistant orders.
- Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces.
- Assesses patient comfort as it relates to their casting or splinting, assists with comfort measures and notifies appropriate clinical staff members.
- Removes sutures and staples.
- Provides wound care and incisional dressings.
- Assists physicians with clinical procedures such as the closed reduction of fractures.
- Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes.
- Educates patients on the care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids.
- Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary.
- Helps train new staff members in cast room procedures.
- Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures and other regulatory policies.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working environment.
- Medical office procedures, policies, practices and medical terminology, telephone protocol, and professional etiquette.
- Electronic medical systems, including Athena/Centricity, and Medi-Tech, PM and office management systems and procedures.
- Outstanding knowledge of MS Office.
- Working knowledge of office equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organized with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Develops and maintains effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public by displaying sympathy, tact and understanding.
- Promotes teamwork through collaboration.
- Represents the clinic in a professional manner.
- Able to maintain strict confidentiality on all patient issues.
High School Diploma or GED.
ExperienceMinimum of 1 year cast room / medical office experience.
Certificate / LicenseOrthopedic Technician and ATC Certification Preferred.
