Associate Controls Engineer

Overview

Join FORTNA as an Associate Controls Engineer to help design and commission automated sortation systems for our global customers. In this role you will work under the supervision of Senior Controls Engineers to write PLC code, develop HMI interfaces, and support on-site commissioning and acceptance testing of new or existing equipment.

• Write and implement PLC code, integrate subsystems, and assist in all on‑site commissioning efforts.
• Utilize HMI platforms (Ignition, Aveva Intouch, Wonderware, Aveva Edge, Factory Talk View) to develop interface solutions.
• Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications under guidance.
• Review and understand electrical designs.
• Support the commissioning of complex automated systems, provide site engineering support, and participate in system acceptance testing.

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or comparable.
• Familiar with basic electronic/electrical schematics or components.
• 0–2 years of experience in an industrial controls environment (PLC programming: Rockwell Software, Siemens, Schneider; HMI programming: Factory Talk View, Ignition).
• Familiar with I/O devices and device layout.
• Knowledge of industrial communication networks (Ether Net/IP, Device Net, Profinet, etc.).
• Low voltage electrical design and drawing creation.
• Equivalent work experience may be considered as a substitute for education.
• Experience with Microsoft 365 Office apps.

• Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, results‑focused.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills.
• Ability to take direction from Senior Controls Engineers to support project goals.
• Basic understanding of induction motors, PLCs, and industrial networks is a plus.

This role operates primarily at remote customer sites. When traveling the job environment shifts to a site‑based, typically industrial setting. Travel is up to 75%.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to navigate safely over and around warehouse automation equipment.
• Physical stamina for prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and working in cramped quarters.
• Exposure to potentially dangerous tools and equipment and moving mechanical parts.
• Noise level varies from quiet to moderate to excessive.

The base salary range for this role is $64,200 to $96,300.
