Job FunctionThe Technical Trainer identifies training needs and leads, directs, develops, implements, and monitors technical training for operations and maintenance activities. The role provides training and guidance for the safe, reliable, and economic operation of HECO’s transmission and distribution overhead and underground systems and ensures compliance with company standards and State and Federal regulations.
Essential Functions- Coordinated apprentice training, evaluating trainee progress, and developing proficiency tools.
- Documented updates to the department’s training procedures and manuals and tracking training to keep all aspects current.
- Trained employees on new and updated operating procedures and supported others in developing training programs.
- Coordinated training programs with supervisors, superintendents, and planners for positions beyond apprentices.
- Research, analyzed, developed, evaluated, and scheduled senior helper and apprentice training and maintained training records.
- Assisted in analyzing the division’s annual training budget.
- Temporarily substituted for the Supervisor and other merit staff during Incident Command events or emergencies.
- Participated in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Thorough knowledge of operation and maintenance of transmission, distribution, and substation facilities.
- Knowledge of overhead and underground construction standards and company APM, GIM, Code of Conduct, and regulations.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and mainframe systems and related software.
- Knowledge of compliance requirements with State and Federal environmental and safety regulations.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and effective written, oral, and listening communication; conflict resolution and willingness to train.
- Promotes teamwork and a self‑directed workforce to support company initiatives.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and utilize technical publications and electrical single line diagrams.
- Problem‑solving skills with independent or assisted resolution.
- Flexibility in a demanding work environment and adaptation to rapidly changing priorities.
- Handling difficult or sensitive issues with tact, courtesy, and discretion.
- Must qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and Class A CDL license to train and monitor operations.
- Ability to learn forecasting, budgeting, and measuring costs.
- 5–7 years of operational and/or maintenance experience in an electric utility or equivalent.
- 1–2 years of supervisory/leadership experience.
- 1–2 years of experience in preparing operating budgets and managing expenses (preferred).
- 1–2 years of training peers or subordinates.
- Qualified or capable of qualifying as crew leader and possessing supervisory/leadership skills for a transmission and distribution setting (preferred).
