In this position, you will be responsible for the inspection and verification of liquid cargo products on board seagoing vessels and shore tank installations. Recording of accurate raw data to be used to produce operational reports. Routine preparation and testing of items/samples, completion of associated quality control activities, and reporting of results within the scope of the laboratory using both basic and advanced instrument techniques for which they are trained.
Key activities:
- Measure cargo quantity using tank gauging, ullage, sounding, and dipping; calculate volumes using calibration tables, API/ASTM standards, and temperature corrections; verify ship, shore, and terminal figures during loading and discharge; witness and record custody transfer measurements.
- Take representative samples of petroleum products and chemicals; ensure sampling follows API, ASTM, ISO, or IP standards; check product specifications (density, temperature, appearance, water content); identify contamination, commingling, or off‑spec cargoes.
- Monitor loading, discharging, and transfer operations; inspect tanks, pipelines, hoses, and manifolds for cleanliness and suitability; verify line displacement, tank stripping, and draining procedures; confirm cargo segregation and correct tank allocation.
- Adhere to HSE procedures, including PPE, gas testing, and permit‑to‑work system; ensure compliance with IMO, MARPOL, ISGOTT, and terminal regulations; identify and report unsafe conditions or environmental risks; monitor vapor control and spill prevention measures.
- Prepare inspection, quantity, and sampling reports; issue Certificates of Quantity (COQ) and Certificates of Quality (COQ/CQ); record discrepancies, protests, and statements of fact; maintain accurate custody transfer documentation.
- Investigate cargo losses, gains, contamination, or delays; liaise with ship crew, terminal operators, charterers, and surveyors; recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Act impartially as a third‑party inspector; maintain confidentiality and data integrity; stay current with industry standards and regulations.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Able to work with limited supervision.
- Excellent problem‑solving and organisational skills.
- Take responsibility for the care and upkeep of measurement and sampling equipment.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Full training will be provided.
- Comfortable with the physical demands of the job, including outdoor work, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Prepared to work unsocial and unscheduled hours, including weekends and Bank Holidays in line with shipping movements which operate 24/7–365 days a year.
- Demonstrable competency on a range of IT platforms.
