Position OverviewThe Flight Nurse works with the Flight Paramedic to deliver advanced critical care to patients. The Flight Nurse is ultimately responsible for all direct patient care in accordance with Life Flight Network protocols.
Qualifications & Skills- Minimum five (5) years of ICU/ED/Trauma experience within the last ten (10) years. Previous flight experience preferred.
- Current license and/or certification: RN license appropriate to assigned location;
Basic Life Support (BLS);
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS);
Pre‑hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS);
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS);
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP);
Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) completed prior to independent duties; CFRN exam within one year of hire, certification within two years of hire. - Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) or Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) preferred until certified as a Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN).
- Drivers must have a current, valid state driver’s license and at least three years driving experience. Maintenance of Airport Badge (where applicable). Passport or entry into Canada may be required. Complies with weight restrictions (max 250 lbs fully outfitted).
- Strong leadership skills and ability to communicate with diverse groups under stressful situations.
- Ability to work varied shifts and cover fixed‑wing and/or ambulance call shifts.
- Clinical quality: perform to highest standards, with competency in chest tube insertion, surgical airway, endotracheal intubation, intraosseous insertion, and central line placement. Responsible for all patient care.
- Work with the Flight Paramedic in delivering age‑appropriate (Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric) patient care, documentation, and follow‑up.
- Assist with equipment retrieval, inventories, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment in working order.
- Help ensure safe aircraft operation and enforce safety policies; assist pilot in navigation, take‑off, landing, and in‑flight procedures.
- Participate in business development: encourage public opinion of LFN, provide flight education, and collaborate on business & operations plans.
- Additional tasks may include statistical data compilation or related projects as assigned.
