EU Policy Leader Fellowship 2026–27 (Fully Funded)
The Policy Leader Fellowship (PLF) at the European University Institute’s Florence School of Transnational Governance is a distinguished residential programme designed for experienced policy professionals from across the world. This fellowship offers an exceptional platform to deepen expertise, develop strategic policy recommendations and engage with a global network of practitioners and scholars.
- The fellowship begins in September 2026 and is offered in durations of five or ten months
. - It is residential
, meaning fellows live in Florence for the duration and fully participate in the institute’s academic and professional activities. - Fellows work on individual projects developing policy recommendations or practical solutions to pressing transnational governance challenges, and collaborate on one of the faculty-led thematic projects at the school. (European University Institute )
- Open to policy professionals from civil service, government, media, NGOs, private sector or international organisations, rather than strictly academic profiles.
- The general expectation is at least 10 years of relevant professional experience
, though no specific academic degree is mandatory beyond a bachelor’s equivalent. (European University Institute ) - Fellows receive a monthly grant to support living expenses during their stay in Florence.
- Additional allowances may apply for partners or dependent children under certain conditions.
- Travel reimbursement for the fellow’s incoming and outgoing trips is provided up to a certain limit.
- Access to the rich academic community of the EUI and its network of scholars, policy makers and professionals, as well as lifelong membership in the alumni network after completion. (European University Institute )
- Applicants must prepare a work plan defining their intended project, describe how it aligns with the school’s thematic areas and how they will benefit the community.
- Selection criteria include professional achievements and potential, project relevance to governance/transnational policy, motivation, and the diversity of the cohort. (GFMD )
For mid-career professionals looking to deepen their impact in policy, governance, international relations or civil society, the PLF offers:
- A unique chance to reflect on your professional trajectory in an immersive academic environment
- Opportunity to connect with peers from diverse sectors and geographies
- A platform to produce meaningful policy outputs that can influence transnational governance
- Credentials and networks that enhance your profile for future leadership roles
