The project investigates potential collusive practices in Italy’s retail gasoline market, examining how transparency and regulation may influence coordination among firms. The August 2023 Fuel Price Transparency Reform, which
mandated stations to display regional average prices, offers a natural experiment to study whether public price disclosure facilitates tacit collusion. The analysis also considers pricing dynamics in the biofuel component, where AGCOM has already confirmed coordinated behavior. Using diff-in-diff and matching methods, the study offers evidence to inform competition policy and transparency design.
